Introduction

Full-screen Graffiti is a useful feature of newer handhelds, but it can interfere with many applications – particularly games and drawing programs. GrafAuto is a freeware utility that allows you to define rules that automatically switch full-screen Graffiti on or off for each application on your handheld.

Compatibility and Installation

GrafAuto is compatible with handhelds that use Palm's full-screen Graffiti system. If you're not sure whether this includes your handheld or not, you can try GrafAuto safely. If it detects that it is not compatible with your handheld, GrafAuto's preference panel will display a message informing you of this instead of showing the configuration options.

To install or upgrade GrafAuto simply HotSync GrafAuto.prc on to your handheld. If GrafAuto detects that it is compatible with your handheld it will enable itself immediately.

After installation GrafAuto will appear as a panel inside your handheld's preferences. To start with you will probably want to configure some of your applications to have Graffiti turned on or off automatically, so open up GrafAuto from the preferences and press the Configure button.

Should you wish to uninstall GrafAuto, delete it via the application launcher. If you are using a non-standard launcher and experience trouble deleting GrafAuto, go into GrafAuto's preferences and make sure the "Show status" option is set to "Never", then try deleting it again.

Instructions

Manual Mode

GrafAuto can display the status of the full-screen Graffiti system as a button in the command bar. A solid button means that it is on and an outline button means that it is off. Pressing the button will switch it to the opposite state.

Automatic Mode

You can define rules that turn full-screen Graffiti on or off for particular applications. When an application with such a rule quits, the mode is restored to what it was before the application was run (unless you manually changed the full-screen Graffiti mode while the application was running).

Configuration

GrafAuto is configured from inside your handheld's preferences. The GrafAuto preference panel provides the following options:

  • Full-screen Graffiti: You can view and change the current state of the full-screen Graffiti system.
  • Show status: Choose whether you want to see the status of the full-screen Graffiti system in the command bar. You may wish to turn this off to stop the command bar from getting too crowded, or if your handheld provides a toggle button in the status bar (such as the Tungsten T3).
  • Auto mode: The Enable checkbox lets you control whether full-screen Graffiti is automatically turned on and off. The Configure button opens the dialog where you can define settings for each application.

If GrafAuto is not compatible with your handheld, its preference panel will display a message saying this instead of showing the configuration options.

Note: The standard Writing Area preference panel should be ignored when you are using GrafAuto. The Writing Area panel has its own idea of whether full-screen Graffiti should be on or off, and it ignores the current setting.

Feedback and Support

If you find a bug, or would like to send me any feedback about GrafAuto, you can contact me at benmichell@yahoo.com. If you are reporting a bug please include in your message the version number of GrafAuto you are using, the type of handheld you have, and a description of the problem (ideally with steps to reproduce it). I can't promise to respond to every message I receive, but I'll try!

Disclaimer

When trying any new software it is a good idea to back up your handheld first. I have done my best to ensure that GrafAuto is free of bugs and is safe to use, but there are no guarantees. Use this software at your own risk: if you lose any data that is your problem! By installing this software you agree to this condition.

Distribution

GrafAuto is freeware. It may be used and distributed freely provided that it is not modified in any way and this manual is included with the application.

Revision History

Version 1.1: 17th September 2004
  • Known issue: On the Tungsten T3, the Graffiti button in the control bar (at the bottom of the screen) does not show the true state of full-screen Graffiti when GrafAuto turns it on or off.
  • Fixed an incompatibility with the Tungsten T3: if Graffiti was toggled with the button in the control bar, the on-screen "ink" sometimes turned invisible.
Version 1.0: 16th September 2004
  • Initial release.
