Know what Exchange.stf, Default.prf, Outlook.sft, and Outlook.prf are used for:

*.prf is Profile information, *.sft is installation customization AS WELL AS registry modification (binding of protocols  order)

There was one question on the Chat service, which I had no idea about. It was about using multiple Chat Servers, and you want to shut one down without effecting the users too much. How??

possible choices: stop chatsvc service? Pause workstation service.  Cant find much on this one.  You can smart bleed a chat server(stop new connections and wait for others to disconnect or maybe it disconnects them and reconnects on a different server) and then stop the server, this does not abrubtly kill users.  To stop service do Net stop or services, but I saw on online help that if the server is a link between chat servers you will have problems, however it did not say how to avoid this.  So maybe reconfigure the link to avoid server and then bring it down.

You use an IMAP client to delete a message. Can you recover it from Outlook and how?

If the IMAP purges it it is gone.  Also IMAP must use an IMAP client to recover if IMAP deleted it. It does not use special folders so it just flags it as deleted.  Outlook and OE are IMAP compliant.

Question about open interval and retry interval.

Open interval # of tries before NDR.  Retry Interval delay(secs) to wait to reopen a connection

Want to reject mail coming from unwanted source over internet. How?

Maybe IMS but not restriction tab.

Want to prevent certain fields from appearing to anonymous LDAP requests. How?

Attribute page on DS configuration

Want to prevent certain fields from replicating to other sites, but want it visible to people in own site. How?

You have enabled advanced security. As users leave company, you revoke keys. Performance declines. What should you do?

Revoke the key from the disabled mailbox? delete mailbox?

Need to know trust levels and where you can apply them.

all objects w/ trust =< the connector is exported.   Used with Dir. Sync.

Someone need only permission to add new users. Where should you give them permission?

Admin on the Site Object

??You just added 64MB ram to an exchange server. The pagefile is 32MB. The system attendant starts, but the directory service fails. What is the problem?

No space on drive because of pagefile.  One reason ds fails if it can't find the logs or dbs or it runs out of space.  Maybe he should run perf. opt.

How to allow secure access for mail users such as the port numbers that must be allowed through a firewall to allow POP3, LDAP, and HTTP users to access the server and which authentication method to select.

Open ports.  Authentication includes: Basic, Basic SSL, C&R, C&R SSL, MCIS, MCIS SSL (MS Commercial Internet Server)

You have to take an Exchange server down for maintenance but have Server Monitor checking its status. How do you take it down so that Server Monitor doesn't generate any error messages ?

Start Administrator temp. disabling serv. mon with command line(admin.exe -t nr)

RPC Binding Local\MS\Ex\Ex Provider

Question on settings for Perfwiz. :

Multiserver if multiple Exchange Servers;  If high number of users do not load pulic folders.

CLIENTS ALWAYS CONNECT TO THE SERVER USING PORT #135. THIS IS THE NT RPC END-POINT MAPPER SERVICE! THIS THEN TELLS THE CLIENT WHICH PORTS TO USE TO CONNECT TO IS AND DS, AS THESE PORTS ARE ASSIGNED DYNAMICALLY.

Know how to set up an Exchange Server as both a Dirsync Server and a Dirsync Requestor and how to make sure the Global Address Lists are updated (and what to do if they are not).

Add specific object.  Dir. Sync Server - very basic. schedule time is T3.  Requestor - Trust level and containter to sync.  Can import or Export to MSMAIL.  Settings include send and/or rec. updates, template info, dir sync into export/import.  Schedule is T1
Man dir sync by pausing dir. sync service.

Understand how to use the Export and Import commands to add mailboxes and update directory information for current users from various databases.

Import:update, create, mod or delete.  Export something that is not in header, just create export file with header add field and it will export out.

Understand Disaster Recovery including how to set up a "Hot Spare" system.

backup to spare that has same org & site but not joining.  Then can save to a personal folder and give person. pst.

Understand the concept of cost for address space and connectors for routing or not routing certain mail.

Each connector can have multiple sites connected to it.   The GWART is the routing table of connected sites.  A Cost can be assigned. 0; 1 to 100. 0 is always used(not allowed on connector).  100 would be used if none else available.  Costs are cumalitive so if a direct line costs 10 but 2 hop line costs 5 and 3 it would go the latter route.  Lowest cost is chosen when routing messages.  MTA handles routing.

Understand Deleted Item Recovery and how your backup strategy might effect the user's ability to recover their data.

Server side invisible recycle bin.  Can set retention days and/or purge after full backup.  If both set backup takes precedence ie. 60 day retention time will not delete if past 60 days until backed up, then it will be deleted.   not counted against size limits.  Public folders: if item expires due to age it cant be recovered, if it is deleted before expiration then it can be done for the length of time set for item retention..   Imap or mapi must be used to recover if it was used to delete it.

Understand Personal v Offline folders

Offline folders start as a mirror of your online folders, personal folders are just folders you can save to.  By default the Outlook default folders are configured as offline you can set user defined by setting the synchronization tab on folder.  Can configure public folders as offline by copying to your favorite pub. folders.   Can sync.on 1 folder or some or all.

Personal folders just allow you to have folders but they reside on your harddrive.  No sync. You can backup folders(even outlook defaults) by doing an export to pst

Utils

ESEUtil- Defrags, Checks Corruption, Check DB Integrity
ISINTEG -patch test and fix errrors in info. store. Patch repairs info stores that will not run after restored from offline backup
Edbutil replaced by ESEUTIL.  Slower, defrag, integrity checker.

Synchronization

REQMAIN utility(T1) forces directory synchronization T1
T1 send updates time.  Requestors create messages for dir sync server (reqmain)
T2 Process update time, server takes messages from requestors and adds to GAL (servmain) (stop & Restart service)
T3 Process update time, requestor tkes message from server and adds to GAL (Reqmain, import, rebuild)

Know the diffference between having circular logging turned on and off

On it recycles logs and you can only restore to last full backup.  Off it keeps logs until backup(Full or Incr) and you can recover up to second it crash.

Know your ports

SMTP 25 HTTP 80 POP3 110 NNTP 119 RPC 135 LDAP 389

Firewall

Must allow 135.  Configure(Registry) for DS & IS ports and allow those ports access.  Allow 110 and 25 if using pop3.  Give anonymous to LDAP and give 389 access.

Protocols you can give access to on mailbox level

HTTP, IMAP4, NNTP, POP3

Backups

Inc. backup changed since last full or incr. Restore req. last full and each inc.
Diff changed since last full, Restore req. last full and last diff.  Doesnt remove transaction logs.

Server Locations – Know how the network band width effects performance (ie – multiple LAN segments, 10/100 switched environment with segments: 1 –100MB no users, 1-10MB 25 users, 1-10MB 150 users + 1 MB SLOW wan link with 125 users and one server to deploy

Put server where the most users are.  Doesn't mater that one segment is 100mb when everyone else connects at 10MB

Address space = KNOW WHAT THE X.400 alphabets mean (what is p in Exchange)

c=country,a=administrative domain(space by default), p=private management domain(Exchange Organization), o=Organization(site name)01-4=org units, cn=common name, q=generation qualifier, i=inits,s=surname,g=given name

LDAP – Know what and where to change anonymous access. Know its defaults for information provided by a directory lookup. And pretend you just installed your LDAP capabilities behind a firewall, what would you do next?

Change Anonymous in LDAP properties; On DS site Config Attribute tab. Defaults:Anonymous has name company info, etc.;All authenticated has all attirbutes: Intersite has all but few; Open port 389.

Dial-up ISP access: TURN, ETRN questions

ETRN - allows Exchange send a command to another host to prompt that host to send any messages wating for the specified domain.(dequeing).

Client computer installation – Requiring a user to logon when starting the client even when client is currently logged on to the NT network.

No clue...why would you want to do this.

DL is slow to expand, ONE server only, do what

Disabled MS address in Site Addressing?  Sounds good with fewer addresses to expand the quicker it should take.

Address book view – Where it is done and where would the client see it from?

Done in admin; Client would see after restart.

X.400 Connector – KNOW the advanced tab options

Know the MTA properties for Site and Server (RTS especially)

How the LDAP search options can be configured

Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) allows LDAP clients to perform searches when connected to a directory. For example, if you search the directory for a particular user, LDAP returns the entry for that user. LDAP matches the requested information with an entry in the directory by performing substring searches. There are three types of substring searches that LDAP can perform:

-Initial substring search

The directory matches the substring that the user specifies against the beginning of an attribute in the directory. For example, an Initial substring search for |St| in a display name would return Stacey and Steve, but not Sean or Shannon. Initial substring searches are typically faster than the other types of substring searches.

-Final substring search

The directory matches the substring that the user specifies against the end of an attribute in the directory. For example, a Final substring search for |ne| in a display name would return Suzan Fine. Final substring searches are typically slower than Initial substring searches.

·    Any substring search

The directory matches the substring that the user specifies against any portion of an attribute in the directory. For example, a substring search for “r” in a display name would return Maria and Raymond. Any substring searches are the slowest substring searches.

Option    Description
Treat "any" substring searches as "initial" substring searches (fast)      Specifies that only initial substring searches will be performed. Final substring searches will not be performed, and any substring searches are converted to initial substring searches (which will return partial but sometimes incomplete results).
Allow only "initial" substring searches (fast)    Specifies that only initial substring searches will be performed. Final substring searches and any substring searches will not be performed.
Allow all substring searches (slow)    Specifies that all substring searches will be performed, including initial, any, or final.
Maximum number of search results returned    Specifies the maximum number of entries that will be returned for all searches. Performance decreases as this number increases. If more than the maximum number of specified results are found in an LDAP search, Microsoft Exchange Server does not return results for the search. If no number is specified, a default of 100 is used for the number.

Remember how to clean up tracking logs

Installation – during an install, DS does not start, why?

Not configured correctly, Disk out of space.

X.400 vs. Site Connector in scheduling

Site can’t do scheduling

If trust is > than container then it won't be replicated.    So you can limit individuals not just containers.
