"Danger, Danger Will Robinson" is a phrase Mark Goddard often heard in his role as Major Don West in the 1960's hit television series Lost in Space. During his real life, the phrase he should have heeded was "Danger, Danger Mark Goddard." This memoir maps Goddard's roundtrip journey from a small town boy to a TV star and back again recounting humorous anecdotes about co-stars and celebrities like Billy Mumy, Peter Fonda, Buddy Hackett, and Jim Brown. This trip gets bumpy along the way, though, with two failed marriages and a career nosedive before Goddard has the realization that changes his life. Told with humor and candor, To Space and Back gives the reader a roller coaster ride equal to any side trip the Jupiter II took on its way to Alpha Centauri.
“To Space and Back: A Memoir” is not about Lost in Space nor is it about Major Don West but about the life and times of the author actor Mark Goddard. Lost in Space fans may lament that there is very little in the book about their favorite fandom but anyone who wants to get to know and enjoy the life story of actor Mark Goddard will really enjoy his book. I found his memories of Hollywood entertaining and the details of his personal life touching. The trials of peaks and valleys and sometimes fleeting success working on television shows clearly took a terrible toll on his marriages and children. When he made the choice to return to school and sought his new calling in teaching the industry and fans lost a great artist contributor but for all the greater good. As fans we only see what is presented to us on the screen or stage. Mark has opened the curtain and taken us behind the scenes to show and share with us what real life drama goes on when the cameras stop rolling.

From a life-size John Rigg built Robby the Robot that tends bar in his home to the hero prop Land of the Giants Spindrift Pilot Control yoke Texan Monte Earwood has the largest scifi art, toy and prop collection I have ever been seen. Monte works from a computer chair constructed from a F-100 Super Saber ejection seat surrounded by glass display cases filled with rare toys, props and art he has collected over the past 20 years. Monte has journeyed from his San Antonio home to the far east coast to visit the Jeff Story Jupiter 2 flight desk and to the northern reaches of Washington state to spend time with John Rigg in his world famous Robot Hut museum and workshop. Over the years he has followed the conventions and forged many friendships with fans and stars alike. His memories of days spent at conventions and dinners with Jonathan Harris, Kevin Burns and Glen Ware along with his videos are something all fans dream of. I had the privilege of spending a week with Monte in his Texas home a few years back on my way to Sunny California from the Stumpf Tree House in Des Moines. Monte shared his vast collection with me and while there transported me to his ranch where he hopes one day to construct a Lost in Space Museum with cabins based on oil platform escape pods in the shape of the Jupiter 2.

Bobby May passed away this morning at the age of 69. He was my friend and my coworker and he was one of the hardest working guys in show business that I ever knew. He managed to create a classic TV personality out of a claustrophobic fiberglass prop that he was crammed inside of for over three years. He memorized 40-50 pages of dialogue each week for 84 episodes and delivered it with passion and rhythm while all the time knowing that it would eventually be re-recorded by Dick Tufeld.
I never heard Bobby say a bad word about anybody. He had a laugh that was loud and infectious. He called people "Buddy." He knew hard times and he knew easy times. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. Bobby was a one of a kind who truly brought soul to the Robot on Lost in Space. He loved playing the Robot, and he loved all the fans of Lost in Space. He traveled all over the world meeting fans and attending conventions. When the series was originally on the air, Irwin Allen, the creator and executive producer, wanted people to think the robot was real, so Bobby received no billing or credit for his hard work. It wasn't until many years after that Bobby started to get recognized for his amazing contributions to the show. I was happy to see him get the credit he deserved.
I enjoyed working with Bobby when I was a boy, and I enjoyed working with him and seeing him and his loving wife Judy as a man. Bob and I spoke several times in the last month, and although I I knew that he was going through some serious health issues as well as having lost his home and all his possessions in a recent fire, Bobby was positive about the future. I wish him well and send him positive energy and love on his new journey. I'm sure Jonathan Harris is insulting him right now!

So where is the (Lost in Space B-9 )robot now?
It hurts me to say this but my original costume was taken off the lot at 20th century fox and sold to a private collector. I'm very proud of this though. Our stunt robot, which was called that because that was the robot that we put on wires when it was floated outside the spaceship and when it was hung upside down in "junkyard in space" and it was purchased by Paul Allen the billionaire and he honored us and put it in his museum in Washington Science Fiction Musuem and Hall of Fame and he also has Robby there, too.
This man has done something wonderful because generations to come will be able to see the robot. I'm really thrilled.
So what happened to the other one, it's just sitting in someone's collection hidden away?
Yeah and that hurts. What I'd like to see and I'm sure if Irwin Allen were alive it would be done and that is that the robot costume should be in the Smithsonian next to Archie bunker's chair and Fonzie's jacket. It deserves to be there. With all that said and done there is a club that is worldwide that is called the B-9ers builders club that builds their own robots. I have judged different contests where some of theme have built robots and some of them are better than the one that I wore.
