Safety Rules For The Laboratory

In order to make the laboratory a place of learning and discovery, it must be a safe place. Safety is your responsibility and that of every student in the lab. Unsafe practices endanger not only you but your classmates as well. If you have any questions about safety or about laboratory procedures, be sure to ask your teacher.

Electrical Safety

-- Never handle electrical equipment with wet hands. Work areas, including floors and tables, should be dry.

-- Keep electrical cords away from areas where someone may trip on the cords, or where the cords can tip

over laboratory equipment.

Chemical Safety

-- The hazards of chemicals used should be known (e.g. corrosiveness, flammability, toxicity, reactivity, etc.)

-- Do not eat or drink in the laboratory

-- Never taste any substance in the laboratory.

-- Alert your teacher to any chemical spills.

-- Do not let acids and bases touch your skin or clothing. If a substance gets on your skin, rinse

immediately with cool water and alert your teacher.

-- When shaking or heating a test tube containing chemicals, always point the test tube away from yourself and others.

-- Never return unused chemical to the original container. Dispose of them as directed by your teacher.

-- Droppers should be returned to their original containers.

-- Follow laboratory instructions, don't mix chemicals just to see what happens.

Eye Safety

-- Approved safety goggles MUST BE WORN in the laboratory, when directed by instructor.

-- Contact wearers should ALWAYS wear safety goggles.

-- Know the location of an emergency eye wash station in the laboratory.

Fire Safety

-- Tie back long hair and confine loose clothing.

-- Never reach across an open flame.

-- Wear safety goggles when working with flames.

Glassware Safety

-- Inform your teacher about any broken, chipped, or cracked glassware; it should not be used.

-- Place broken glass in a specially designated container.

-- Do not pick up broken glass with your bare hands.

Hygienic Care and Proper Waste Disposal

-- Clean up your laboratory work area after you are finished; dispose of paper toweling, etc. in their proper containers.

-- Follow your teacher's directions regarding proper procedures for biological and chemical waste disposal.

-- Always wash your hands before leaving the laboratory.

Causes For Student Removal From The Laboratory

-- Horseplay, pranks, general rowdiness, or acts of mischief.

-- Not following verbal corrections from the teacher.

-- Disturbing other students laboratory work.

-- Doing unauthorized activities or procedures.

PROTECTIVE EYE WEAR AND APRONS ARE AVAILABLE FOR LABORATORY WORK.

REPORT ALL ACCIDENTS, NO MATTER HOW SLIGHT, TO THE TEACHER IMMEDIATELY.

NO CHEMICALS OR EQUIPMENT MAY BE REMOVED FROM THE LABORATORY.

You must sign your copy stating that you have read the above rules, understand them, and are willing to follow them.

Guidelines for

CHEMISTRY A

Box Elder High School

Grading: All scores will be totaled for each student.

The student's total will be divided by the total points possible to determine a percentage.

The percentage will be used to find a grade according to the following scale:

A's 100-95% A C's 79.9-76% C+

94.9-91% A- 75.9-71% C

70.9-65% C-

B's 90.9-87% B+

86.9-84% B D's 64.9-60% D+

83.9-80% B- 59.9-55% D

54.9-50% D-

Below 50% F

Approximately 45% of the total points will come from the packet scores. About 40% of the total points will come from tests, and about 10% of the total points will come from daily participation quizzes. 5% will be given for demonstration of responsibility, cooperation and the completion of assignments in areas related to lifetime skills. These areas include, but are not limited to, knowledge of policies, cooperation in parent notifications, the return of materials, which contribute to the education and welfare of students at BEHS.

 

Daily Participation Quizzes:

Students will pick up quiz paper at the front desk when entering the room and answer the questions from the overhead projector. Quiz Papers will be put away at the tardy bell. The daily quiz is worth 5 points for doing it and 1 point extra credit if it is answered correctly. These cannot be made up!!

There is no other extra credit!!!

Attendance Statement:

1. Students are expected to be in class every school day.

2. One or two absences will not hurt your grade, but be careful not to accumulate too many.

3. Tardies (1-6) will affect your citizenship according to school policy and cannot be made up or changed. Those tardies beyond 6 will reduce your grade percentage by one percent per additional tardy.

0-1 tardies COULD earn Honors (H).

2-3 tardies COULD earn Satisfactory (S).

4-5 tardies COULD earn Needs Improvement (N).

6 or more tardies WILL earn Unsatisfactory (U).

4. For every truant absence a 5% grade deduction will be given.

5. A 2% bonus will be given to those students with no tardies and honors citizenship.

6. School policy states there can be a maximum of 6 absences per trimester. Unless time and work are made up with the instructor for any absences over 6, a 5% grade reduction will occur for each absence over six.

7. Each student may use the hall pass three times during the trimester. Each unused hall passes will receive 10 extra points which will be added to the final notebook.

8. All make-up work is the responsibility of the student.

9. Make sure your homework is to class on the day it is to be corrected. You may send it with a classmate or give it to the instructor early. Work not present at the beginning of the period on the day it is to be corrected will receive a maximum grade of 50%.

10. A test taken before or on the class test date will be full credit. A test taken after the class test date will be multiplied by a factor of 0.8. A missed test must be taken within 10 days. After that time, it becomes a zero.

11. Laboratory work may be made up by one of the following ways:

    1. Missed laboratory work may be copied from lab partners for half credit on the laboratory.
    2. Laboratory work may be done before or after school the same day or next morning by arrangement with the instructor.
    3. Special assignments given by the instructor.

POLICIES and PROCEDURES

According to school policy, hats are not to be worn in the auditorium or classrooms.

Food or drink is not allowed in the classroom.

Disrespect for the teacher or classmates will not be tolerated.

 

You must have a parent/guardian signature and your signature stating that you have read, understand, and will follow the above stated policies.

 

REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION WILL BE PROVIDED TO QUALIFIED PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES. ALL MATERIALS CAN BE MADE AVAILABLE IN ALTERNATIVE FORMATS OF COMMUNICATION.

 

  Lab Contract

 

I hereby agree to accept the following conditions as a user of the Chemistry lab facilities here at Box Elder High School:

  1. During lab exercises I will follow all safety rules as outlined in my safety contract.
  2. When I finish with the lab exercise I will wipe down my lab counter.
  3. I will pick up and take care of lab equipment as directed by my instructor.
  4. I will make sure that all the chemicals and trash are disposed of properly.
  5. I will make sure that my sink is free of debris.
  6. Before leaving I will fold my apron, put my goggles in the bag and set them in the drawer, which I will leave open for inspection.

I understand that my grade will be based on my compliance to the above conditions. I can earn a maximum of 100 points per trimester. For each condition I choose not to follow I will lose 10 points of my grade. If at any time I choose to earn back lost points I must do one half hour per 10 points of Chemistry service.
