Teachers' Questions Answered

Last Update: Friday 6 August 1999

Here are some questions asked by teachers during my training workshops for Phase 3 schools. I hope the answers are adequate and that you will try them out to see if the advice works.
Do give me feedback at albert_ong@mailexcite.com if you need any clarification or if you have a better procedure which you might want to share with others. I shall be only too pleased to include them here.
(The topics below are in alphabetical order.)

Dial-up MOE
Question: How do I dial-up to MOE web site from home using my official username id and password?
The reply:
You can't unless you configure your PC first. To do this, go to your school LAN computer which is connected direct to MOE. (You do not need a password to access MOE Intranet from school.) After accessing MOE Intranet, look for the menu which indicates "Internet and Intranet Services". Click on this and you will be shown an index of services. Look for "How to configure your home computer to dial-up MOE". Print out the instructions (11 pages!), take them home and configure your home PC following the information contained in it.
"If at first you don't succeed, try and try again!" Finally, you'll be rewarded with the ability and privilege of being able to dial-up to Internet using your MOE account. It's free for you as a teacher, but you pay for the telephone line and the modem in your house.

Email Account (1)
Question: How do I apply for an MOE email account?
The reply:
One way is to inform your HOD/IT who will ask you to complete an Application Form which is then endorsed by your Principal. Next, it is sent to ITB/MOE for approval, after which you will receive an id and password under confidential cover, as well as a code of ethics for the use of the account.
The other way is to download the Application Form from MOE Intranet under the section on "How to apply for an email account." Fill up the form and submit it to your HOD/IT who will do the needful.

Email Account (2)
Question: My email account doesn't work after some time.
The reply:
Most probably, it's because you have allowed it to lapse. MOE has informed each account holder that he needs to renew/refresh it every 3 months, and you have forgotten to do so.
There are 3 ways to renew/refresh your email account.
1 Go to MOE Intranet to renew/change the password. However, your password must still be "alive" before you can do so.
2 Go to EWAN to renew the password. EWAN is good as it can renew your password even when it has already expired.
3 Get your school TA to assist you.
Remember: The MOE email account is a privilege and must be used officially and responsibly.

Home Page
Question: How do we set up a personal home/web page?
The reply:
The first thing to do is to learn how to do it. Click here for instructions on how to set up a home/web page.
In addition, do join up as a member of the many web-hosting sites that give you free web space to put up your personal home page. There you get simple templates to get started. Have fun checking them out.

Lesson Plan (Music)
Question: Music lesson plans are so few. Where can I get them on Internet?
The reply: Yes, indeed. They are few and far between.
One source is the MOE Intranet. Go to C-LITE and at the relevant page you will find a column listing the subjects, of which Music is one. Click on the small triangular icon next to it and you'll be taken to some P5 Music lesson plans.
Another way is to use one of the many search engines and type "Music lesson plans" in the search box. With some perseverance and luck, you'll be able to get what you want.

Movie Clip (1)
Question: How do I copy a movie from a CD-ROM?
The reply:
Insert the CD-ROM in the drive. Go to Windows Explorer/File Manager to read the index showing where the movie files are. Click and drag the required movie files into a folder that you have prepared to store them.
(Note: It is not easy, sometimes, to know what a movie file contains as the filename may be coded (e.g. To2xyz3.mov, GEXYZ456.mpg, g123456.avi) so you may have to play each of them before you can select the ones you want for your lesson. Do remember that there is the Copyright Law to think about as to how you may or may not use the movie.)

Movie Clip (2)
Question: How do I put a movie clip in my PowerPoint presentation?
The reply:
First, you must have a movie file in your harddisk or CD-ROM. Click INSERT on the PowerPoint menu bar and a drop-down window opens. Click MOVIES and SOUNDS, and then MOVIE FROM FILE. A window will open for you to browse and select the required movie file for insertion. The procedure is complete when you spot its icon on your slide. However, the movie will play only in the slide show mode. (Note: Some movies need a Quick Time 3.0 application file to run.)

Print Screen
Question: When we are playing a CD-ROM on our computer and want to print a picture that we like from it, what should we do?
The reply:
Press the PRINT SCREEN key. Exit the programme and go to WORD for Windows or POWERPOINT. Open a new blank page. Click the EDIT key and a drop-down menu opens. Click PASTE and the picture you want appears on the page. Click on the picture and the handles (the tiny square tabs along the sides of the picture) appear for you to resize the picture, making it bigger or smaller as you wish. Then click on FILE and a drop-down menu opens. Click PRINT and your printer will print the picture.

Wallpaper
Question: How do I put my favourite photo as a wallpaper on my computer desktop?
The reply:
Scan your photo, naming it, for instance: myphoto.jpg. Next, view it with your browser (Internet Explorer or Netscape). Click the right mouse button on the image, and a menu opens. Click SAVE AS WALLPAPER, and return to the desktop where you will see your photo as the wallpaper.
