Linux : The Alternative
UNIX needs a lot of space and is expensive, especially for
home users. Here comes in Linux where it was designed to be
small, fast and inexpensive. Linux was originally created
by Linus Torvalds of University of Helsinki in Finland. Linus
was interested in a small Unix system called minix for PC-based
implementaion. He extended the capabilities of minix and here
we have Linux. Linus made Linux source code freely available
and encouraged others to develop it further. As a result,
they did. Today, Linux continues to be developed by a world-wide
team, led by Linus, over the Internet. Linux has an official
mascot, the Linux Penguin, which was selected by Linus Torvalds
to represent the image he associates with the operating system
he created. Although many variations of the word Linux exist,
it is most often pronounced with a short " i " and with the
first syllable stressed, as in LIH-nucks. The current stable
version of Linux is version 2.2. Linux uses no code from any
other proprietary source. Most of the software for Linux is
developed by the Free Software Foundation's GNU project. In
conclusion, Linux is inexpensive; as a matter of fact, it
is free.
Note : The sentence "The current stable version of Linux is
2.2" means the latest stable version of the Linux kernel is
2.2. The kernel can be downloaded at http://www.kernel.org
