Subject: Stabilty of Flash?

Hi all, thought I'd re-emerge from lurkdom,

With all the discussion about the gabbo site, did anyone strike problems
with their browser crashing while veiwing it. Several times, Either my
broswer or PC(wintel) crashed at some point while viewing this site. Has
anyone had similar problems or do I have to chuck Terminator Pro
graphics card in the garbage heap. I have the Flash 2 editor and have
had no problems using it. I was using NN3. Browser problem, hardware or
Flash?

great list - thanks to all on babble, I've learn't heaps but I must go
back to lurkdom and do so real work now. Must learn to speed read!

There are a lot of unanswered variables, however I am not aware of a canned
solution to you problem. That is not to say there isn't one, and that would
be my first step.. see if there is.

I have never worked with 'tango' or 'lasso', but every middleware package I
have worked with has file I/O capabilities. That would answer your first
question, 'caching' as you call it. You simply 'trigger' your middleware to
output a file when your content is changed, most likely replace an existing
file with now outdated content.

This is the 'responsible' thing to do anyhow. If your content changes
infrequently, why tax your server with creating dynamic pages when it can
serve up a static .html?? "Dynamic database driven pages" has become the
'thing to do' as of late, and few have considered how to best employ the
available tools, process has become a secondary consideration. (I'll step
down from my soapbox now..)

As for then duplicating the changed pages to the production server, there
are several options. If 'real-time' is not a necessity, there are many
'mirror' programs available that will mirror a site at scheduled times. I
assume you will want the changes to take place immediately, but if not the
former is by far the easiest route. What kind of access do you have to the
production server, FTP only? Assuming that is the case and you require
real-time changes, the 'trigger' mentioned above is your answer, you need
to update the production server in the same process. Some of the higher end
DBMS offerings have 'triggers' built in and can do a lot, like execute
programs and output files. I will assume your database does not offer this
feature.

You will most likely set up the FTP session in the same script you use to
actually update the database. You will first have it output the static
file, and then you will have it FTP the new file to the production server.
Here again, I don't know the capabilities of 'lasso' or 'tango', but many
scripting utilities allow you to open up a socket and create an FTP
session. Else you can possibly transfer the file via an FTP program with a
command line interface. Again, depends on what the capabilities are and how
far you are willing to go.

Sounds like a lot of work, so I hope you can find a canned solution for
your problem. If not, maybe can find a host that allows the capabilities
you are seeking directly on the production server. Then again, if it is
necessary for some other reason to update the data on your server as well,
this obviously would not work either.

Good luck!

I'm new to the list and in the big scheme of things even newer to
computing. After a life changing accident and after 25 years as a
carpenter and contractor I have started over. About three months ago I
got a mac from re-hab services. In light of what everyone has been
talking about, gabocorp.. This is my offering. I already know that
I have a long ways to go but I also thought you would like to see this.
I hope it works as I have gone to great lengths to prevent it from
flashing. It uses the plug-in for shockwave and flash. It is set for
20 seconds. <http://w3.gorge.net/gizmo>
