John Shelley made many 'sage' comments, among them:
>>Please use your creativity for something else, not for killing people.
>like what? get over it, hanan
along with references to stinking towel headed Arabs and insults at
pacifism...I normally don't respond to this sort of drivel, but John's comment
left me feeling rather sick in the stomach. The racist references and insults
throughout the body of the message were laughable enough to ignore, but
in the
final plea to use your creativity for something worthwhile, he responds
with
the pseudo-posturing ignorance of 'like what...get over it'...
JOHN SHELLEY, IF YOU CANNOT THINK OF ANYTHING BETTER TO USE YOUR MIND
FOR THAN
KILLING AND DESTRUCTION, AND MOCKING THOSE WHO THINK OF HIGHER AND MORE
HUMAN
IDEALS, GET THE HELL OFF THIS LIST AND STOP PRETENDING TO BE ANY SORT OF
DESIGNER. I AM SURE THAT I SPEAK FOR EVERYONE HERE WHEN I SAY THAT YOU AND
YOUR THOUGHTS ARE NOT WANTED!
Thank you, and apologies to other list member for needing to raise my
voice.

Q,
Why is it that 95% of online web portfolios I see aren't linked to the
actual sites? It's baffling to me as it seems to bypass a major function
of
this medium. I want to check out the work people are promoting, but alot
of
the time I can't even see what the URL is from the screen capture. Is there
something I'm missing?
Antony.

I will try to be kind ...
The background of the main window is an "attribute" to HighFive.
(and then in the Drawings section you write :All images in this page are
private property.
Please do not use the images for any comercial purpose.)
I am not clear on why the scroll bar of the main window should be inside
the frameset and not the the edge.
Text on the balck background should be more visible.
I don't understand the numbers at the top frame.
I don't understand the drawing at the left frame and it's purpose.
Good luck in you designs.

10 February 1998
Welcome to another week of Web design fun from our offices in trendy
South of Market, San Francisco. We've got some thanks to give out this
week:
Thanks to Gary, who runs the San Francisco Giants Web site from the
first floor of our building and who gave us a tour and some Giants caps.
Thanks also to everyone who sent mail about Thau's JavaScript tutorial
series - we love to hear from you. (All the tutorials are archived on
our JavaScript page
(http://go.hotwired.com/webmonkey/javascript/eg199806).
Because you all liked the JavaScript tutorial so much, we're planning
a
series of beefy packages and tutorials on dynamic HTML, stylesheets,
design, and - well, heck, let us know what YOU'd like to learn about
(mail us at webmonkey@hotwired.com).

We're not posting any new stories this week because we're busy lolling
around in the sun - uh, rather, we're working hard on upcoming articles
and tutorials. Instead, we're highlighting a few gems from the archives.
Stay tuned in the next few weeks for a manifesto on Web design by
Jeffrey Veen, author of "HotWired Style, Principles for Building Smart
Web Sites"; a comparison of the leading WYSIWYG HTML editors, tested
head-to-head at high speeds in the Mojave Desert; and a
week-and-a-half-long in-depth look at the ins, outs, hows, and whys of
dynamic HTML that Taylor is putting together as we speak.

how's your backend?
Before you put your site together, it's worth turning off the computer
and thinking about how to plan your backend. Pam says be ambitious and
plan for the future.

old cranky's design guide
If Jim Frew were to build a Web site for a freelance client - which he
wouldn't because freelance clients are usually nuttier than an Almond
Joy and about as smart as a bag of hair - but if he were to build that
site, he'd closely follow Old Cranky's fundamentals of Web design.

do, rest your fears. Now you can test all your browser's functions with

CURRENTLY ON WEBMONKEY:
+a damn fast browser+
What do you really want in a browser? An upstart called Opera is banking
on speed and getting noticed. Jeffrey Veen says its timing is perfect.

+more opera+
Paul runs extensive tests on the Opera 3.0 browser. Conclusion? Opera
can't do everything under the sun, but the joint is FAST.

+name it+
NAME, CLASS, and ID are used as identifiers to be used by other elements
like stylesheets and server-side scripts. But which one to use, and when?

Plug-ins are software applications that work within your Web browser to
extend its capabilities, allowing it to display movies, play sounds, or
otherwise enhance the basic pictures-and-text experience.
