Part 2 |
The Intel processors are a good choice for Intel-designed systems; this is because you most likely do not need a BIOS upgrade for an Intel processor. When adding Intel MMX processors to older systems, you will want to check the BIOS for MMX compatability. The bad part about the Intel processors is that Intel has abandonded the socket 7. This means that there are no more upgrade options avalible from Intel beyond their 233 MHz processor. There is talk about a 266 MHz Laptop socket 7 processor, however it is uncertain when it will be released and if it will work with the PowerLeap adapter.
I was more than pleased when I saw my Wintune 97 results; both the CPU Integer Performance and the FPU Floating Point-Performance had significant gains. I put the Wintune results for a PB 680 200 MMX system in for a comparison; I would have included another 233 MHz system for comparison, but my Wintune Project has yet to receive results from a 233 MHz system. A great side effect of this upgrade was that my video performance increased; see my Stealth II S220 Page for details.
If 233 MHz is still not enough speed, you will want to check out my review of the PowerLeap Adapter with a K6-2 300 in part 3 of this review.
