Yesterday I had recieved Alpha p3125 and had tried it.At frist look at the packet. It's look like Alpha p125 very much.In the packet it was packed
with one heatsink for pentium II and III SECC2 type and for celeron SEPP type, one intake cover, screws for attach cover, support, fan attachment
thermal grease, washer and back plate, two 60 mm fans with 26 CFM.
First Look
As I said it look like Alpha p125 too much. The diffrent between it is copper backplate in the central area that help in conduct heat to the aluminum part.
The another one is it's shortening of the lowest fin about two centimeters compared with Alpha p125.This may help in free room for insertion
fan wiring to motherboard but it decreased surface area about 14,960 mm2.There are 34 fins 4 rows,in the total of 136 fins with the length of each pin equal to 60 mm.
except for the lowest fin that has 40 mm.
This picture show copper plate that in the same layer with
aluminum. As you see it was built in good quality .There are two samll holes in each side of heatsink. This hole is for the wind from upper fans blow to the casch
to get rid it's heat. This heat can lock up your system if proper heat tranfer doesn't apply.
There are eight holes ,four for attachment with pentiumII or III ,SECC2 type and others for slot one celeron.
The assembly isn't difficult. Here are the pictures
Installation
I had put it in my Abit Bx6-2.I set the FSB to 133 MHz.and decrease voltage to 1.9 volts. I booted the system,it booted fine at 600 MHz. and no locked up
After idle time I saw the monitor in MBM 4.10 and looked in internal temperature diod .In the idle time the core temperature was at 29 c..That
was lower than my large heatsing 3-4 c..I tried to start running Prime95 about half an hour.No locked up seen but this was not surpricing.
Then I start Quake II demo loop for about half an hour ,no locked up or blue screen is seen. The surpricing was that Alpha p3 125 not only give a stable system.
It marked decrease the diod temperature about 10 c. both in Prime 95 or Quake II demo loop. When I used large heatsink and running Prime95,
the diod temperture was 47 c. but with Alpha p3 125 the diod temp was 37 c..In Quake II demo loop ,the diod temp was 44 c.,Alpha p3 125
still did great job it's temp was 34 c..I live in hot climate zone, the temperture in the morning was around 28-34 c..When put cpu in maximum loaded, the temperture
was about 37-39 c..I think that it's great to run an overclocked cpu one with lower voltage and lower temperature.
Then I try to increase FSB to 140 MHz. but the system wasn't stable with ocassional locked up although I
increased voltage to 2.3 volts. The problem might be others part not the chip itself. So I changed mobo to Aopen AX 63 pro with VIA chipset.
I had ran this system with pentium III 450@648 Mhz. with my large heatsink.I selected FSB to 150 MHz with 2.2 volts, that was the maximum voltage in this mobo. The system posted 670 MHz.,pasted
window screen but locked up in window.I had tried to decreaed ram cas latency to 3 and disable L2 casch but not succesfull.
Conclusion
Alpha p3 125 is a good quality product. It's many and fine fins get it in to the top performance for pentiumIII heatsink. It's cost 55$ ,seem to be high but if you are an overclocker one who
want to run your chip in maximum speed with conventional cooling,Alpha p3 125 is the good choice.Otherwise You need a super cooling system like peltier water cooling system, peltier heatsink or
phase change.
