Raytracing means that the computer renders (generates) a pictures based upon information of the objects you want to see. Now I only use Persistence of Vision aka POV-Ray (earlier I used the DOS-based Quick Ray Tracer which is a very simple program with few possiblities). In POV-Ray, you can use 25 basic shapes and 21 textures. You choose which colours the texures use, with the help of so-called colour maps. Together with POV-Ray comes a lot of example scenes, and many of them show the use of different textures and finishes (reflection, metallic and more). There are (very) many examples of different gold, silver, brass, copper, chrome, glass, stone and wood surfaces. You can even use more than one texture on the same object!
You place the objects in a three-dimensional coordiante system. They can be rotated and scaled.
POV-Ray is freeware, and can be downloaded from www.povray.org.
I plan to show you some of my own creations, so please come back!
