Luwe

Before I begin my story about life in Luwe, I just wanna let you know that I wasn't one of those hip girls or part of the "in" crowd. In high school, I was very laid back, very sheltered and definitely not part of the hip crowd. So my story is from the point of view of one of those regular yoruba girls that went to school in the morning and went right back home or went to lesson after school. OK, now that that is out of the way, where do I begin.....

JSS 1 - On the first day of secondary school, some of the senior girls already had it in for me. A few years earlier, my sister was one of the labor prefects at the school and apparently, she showed some of the girls pepper. So when word got out that Alaba's sister just got into JSS1, it was revenge time for some of the senior girls. During lunch time or before classes began in the morning, some senior girls would just stop me for unnecessary questioning. Sometimes they would send me on long errands during my lunch period so I wouldn't have time to get my own lunch. I also had a couple of confrontations with children of my mother's friends. Being that I knew them before coming to secondary school, I assumed I could call them by their names alone. But I was told that from then on, I must put the word "Senior" before their names whenever I wish to call them or talk to them. I wasn't too pleased with that so I just avoided them as much as possible.

I was also introduced to the whole idea of having a school mother. A school mother was a senior girl that basically took you in as a daughter, looked out for you and bought you gifts. Well, one of the senior girls decided to pick me as her school daughter since she knew my sister when she was a prefect and apparently my sister didn't show her pepper. We had a pretty cool relationship but she wasn't much of a gift buyer - she was very nice to me though and she got me out of trouble with the other senior girls that didn't take much liking to me.

Apart from the whole "senior girls" ordeal, the JSS years were fun. My friend Folawe Agoro was my buddy through it all. (ShoutOut to Folawe who's now in England).

Interhouse sports was one of the best events of the year. This was when everyone in the school was assigned to a "house" (excuse me for the lack of a better term) and the houses competed against one another in track and field events. Not only that, but other schools were invited to compete against one another. During interhouse sports, all I could do was march for my house (Big Up to OYO house) because I didn't have an athletic bone in my body. Another thing that made interhouse sports interesting was that it was the time when our former primary school male classmates came to the school and tried to prove their manhood by "toasting" . There was absolutely nothing perverted about it since these guys were really young and so were we. My good friends and I knew nothing about boys since Mom and Dad always told us to stay away from boys. So when these guys attempted to talk to us, we just made jokes and ignored them. I actually didn't have interest in any guy until JS 3 when I met a Loyola guy and we hit it off great but before I knew what was going on, I was at Muritala Mohammed Airport boarding a plane coming to New York - well, that's another long story.

When JS 2 came around, I was absolutely estatic because then I had "junior girls" under me. I figured it was my turn to start bossing people around - so I thought. The JS 1 girls at the time were just not having it. A lot of them acted like they were older than they actually were. Some of them were bigger than me ( I was tall for my age as well but extremely slim). I mean, these girls intimidated me so much that I didn't even have the nerve to send them on errands. Since I had no luck with bossing them around, I figured I would adopt a school daughter just for the fun of it. Well, I got one alright but since I didn't have the funds to buy her gifts and I didn't have the guts to bail her out when being bothered by the more senior girls, she got herself another school mother - Now that I think about it, that is pretty funny. Home girl saw that I wasn't coming correct so she did what she had to do - It's all good though.

To be continued.........
