Game Of Life DEMO by Theo Kandiliotis
These are some screenshots of various cell colonies that were generated with this demo...

This one here consists of 222 individual cells and the oldest ones in it are 553 generations old.It was generated on my 17" screen (800x600 resolution) in about 30 seconds. The size I selected for the cells was 300. The size is very important as you can use it to determine the overall size and detail of the colony that will be born. The available space for the colony to evolve in, is standard: your screen .Therefore, by changing the size of the cells ,you infact set the colony's growth potential...This colony here stoped increasing after 200 generations as there was no more available space.Remember that in order for a new cell to be born, there has to be an empty area surrounded by 3 alive cells.

This colony is made up from 770 cells with an average age of 92 generations. The size of the cells is set to 100,that's why there is a lot available space on the screen for the colony to grow and grow...Notice that detailed colonies need more time to grow, there are more availables cells on the form and therefore more calculations need to be done as the colony ages. This screenshot was taken 25 seconds after the colony was initialised....

...and here's what it looked like after 3 minutes, during generation 562 when it numbered 1692 alive cells.

Finally, this is the most detailed possible colony (cell size=25) ,it consists of 7853 cells and I had to leave the PC running all night long for it to evolve this far :) Click here for the actual size screenshot .Notice how small the cells are compared with the ones on the previous colonies. As a result of this, the colony has a high growth potential since it will take several hours for it to fill up the whole screen and stop increasing.

Remember that anytime during the demo ,you may see the statistics of the colony (total cells, average age etc) by hitting the F1 key.

That's about everything there is to know about John Conways's brilliant project and this VB5-made Demo. So...why not download the Game Of Life DEMO and see all this in action... :)
