Virtual Reality has always been a dream. With the appalling state of virtual reality to date, it is no wonder many people seem to believe that virtual reality has gone for good. Enter Sony. The consumer electronics giant has taken an interest in virtual reality and what they have come up with is simply stunning, the Glasstron. A few years back, virtual reality headsets were so heavy and uncomfortable that it was amazing to see anyone wear one for more than a few minutes without getting a sore neck. The resolution on the LCD screens was also unacceptable, with a resolution of only 320 x 200, you could literally see the pixels. Sony however has put some of the spark back into virtual reality with the Glasstron, a product that is comfortable to wear and of exceptional quality. The Glasstron has been designed with several uses in mind. It can be used to replace your monitor and do everything you would regularly do with your computer. It can also be used to watch movies using a camcorder or DVD walkman on the run. The Glasstron also has an optional motion-sensor to play games that will leave you in awe. The image quality of the Glasstron does not disappoint. SVGA resolution up to 800 x 600 at 85Hz is simply amazing considering what we have come to expect from virtual reality headsets. There is also support for all common VESA resolutions. Weighing only 120 grams, the Glasstron is the first virtual reality headset that you can forget you are wearing. It has a stunning design with retractable walkman-style headphones via a cord into the headset. The Glasstron also has many hidden parts that make it adjustable to any sized head. At the flick of a switch you can see through the viewer if you decide to come back to reality. This can also be done via a dial progressively in a similar fashion to transition lenses. A main control box, which is slightly larger than pocket size, is connected to the headset and is where all the input goes.
Sony have produced an amazing piece of hardware with the Glasstron.
However, the Glasstron is not without it flaws, namely its price.
At $4200 AU, it is out of the reach of most consumers. Sony have
done it again though. Hopefully we will see more of this product
in the near future as it gets more affordable. There is no doubt
that, it's a Sony!
