PocketMail is a telephone-based service that, using a specific PocketMail device, allows you to send and receive e-mails. The Oregon Scientific PM-32 is a small handheld device designed specifically for the PocketMail service. PocketMail for PalmPilots is also available, where a BackFlip add-on is needed. The Oregon unit has a microphone on the back designed to fit onto a telephone handset's earpiece, as well as a speaker that fits onto the mouthpiece. Calling the PocketMail telephone number on an ordinary phone activates the PocketMail service. The unit is then placed against the phone handset and a button on the front of the unit is pressed. This establishes a connection with the PocketMail service, which will then allow you to send and receive e-mails. The Oregon unit is easy to use and works well. The unit has a backlit LCD screen and labelled buttons to send, receive and compose e-mails. The Oregon is reasonably cheap, although there are charges for the use of the PocketMail service. There is a monthly fee for unlimited e-mails, as well as per use charges for local and international faxes. Quick and easy access to e-mail is provided by the Oregon. For consumers unwilling to lug around a notebook, or PalmPilot users, PocketMail is certainly useful. However, the Oregon does not offer much for those who already have, or are planning to buy a PDA or WAP phone.
