VanMeter
State Park...
Van Meter State Park was once the homeland of the Missouri Indians,
who gave their name to the state and the river. The Missouri inhabited
the area through the early 1700s. Predating the Missouri were prehistoric
Indian tribes, whose burial mounds remain in the park
This area of the park is known as the "Old
Fort" Perched atop a hill, the indians had a 360 degree of
the area.
The indians once fortified this area, the trenches
can still be seen at to the left in the photo.
These trenches were dug by hand and surround the
6.5 acre site.
