• Walks about the Scottish gatherings of the Clans in Northern California led me to believe that persons from Dull may have been lieged at various times to Stewart of Atholl, Murray of Atholl, and Munro. There are apparently no Dulls in Scotland; I intend to verify this in the future.
  
  Dull is a known place name in Scotland. My uncle visited it, and one of my yoga instructors conducted a wedding there. Some people who took the name Dull migrated from the British Isles to the Continent, where they identified with their hosts on the Rhine. After several generations they moved to North America with the Pennsylvania Dutch, and then westward with them to the Ohio River valley. Dulls and Putnams intermarried in Pennsylvania, possibly earlier in Europe, and eventually the Dulls forgot why they took that name in the first place.
  
  American Dulls are reminded that "clan membership" is actually a pledge to support someone else in the case of armed conflict. The Duke of Atholl is a British subject who is authorized to employ his own private army, and Americans need to remember that as U.S. citizens they have repeatedly pledged alliegance "to the flag of the United States of America, and to the republic for which it stands." Those of us who have served the nation directly may recall we also pledged to "defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic."
