I've been working in the IT industry since the early 80's, back in the days of CPM machines, 16K RAM (yes, programs used to run with only 16K of RAM) and loading games and application software from cassette.
After building my first PC and then upgrading it with one of those new storage devices (single sided, single density 5 1/4 " floppy disk drive) and increasing the memory to 64K of RAM (Super powerful for it's time) , I lost track of how PC technology has changed as I've been working in a mainframe environment.
Recent events have forced me to re-assess where my life was going and where would the jobs be in the future.
The problem was "Where do I start ???"
Do you start by looking at what you know (Mainframe operations and programming) or do you go back to your roots and learn everything you've missed over the years.
For me the answer was easy..I don't wish to go into programming (I never was very good at foreign languages) or re-learn the basics and build on them.
Now that I had made the decision to move back to PCs, not as a programmer, the next decision was -
Do I want to support Hardware or Software ??
After thinking long and hard, my decision was "I'm not sure". Next decision was "What can I do to obtain an overview of both Hardware and Software support ??"
The answer, of course, was A+ Certification. The knowledge required to pass the exams is reasonibly easy to obtain, the subject material is not too hard to comprehend, the cost of learning materials is affordable (either books, classroom or correspondence courses) and the knowledge you gain will help you with your decision as to what you want to achieve in the future.
