But other than that... what DO we know about Gourry?
Simple : nothing.
Gourry was never meant to be a serious character. (of course, never was Lina, but she can be sometimes) If he was meant to be serious, then he wouldn't be giving us comic relief in the middle of battles. He DOES have a serious side, which is usually displayed more frequently than Lina's, but it is never really delved into.
He, like Lina, has a hard time expressing any emotion besides hunger, (hey, it's an emotion to him) but is a little more open than Lina. It may end up one day that Lina and Gourry do get together, but if the characters stay as I have seen them, it will not. But hey, life is all about growth.. maybe Kanzaka did it in one of the novels. : ) Lina and Gourry DO deserve each other. Think about it - they're perfectly matched. Eat a lot, like treasure, sarcastic, (did he say his name was Zagildoes?) and emotional shut-ins. However, because they are emotional shut-ins, it's unlikely that they will ever get together.
Gourry's an obedient guy. He'll do what he's told as long as it isn't totally unreasonable. (and sometimes, he'll even do the totally unreasonable, too - as long as he can be convinced) He has a sense of right and wrong. (stronger than Lina's, but not quite Lawful Good) Now this isn't to say he won't do something unlawful, but he won't do it unless he has a reason to.
Reasons to get up off his arse and do something... Lina's bugging him, someone's in trouble, he's hungry and it'd get him food, it'll get rid of the goon parade hovering over him, it would destroy evil. (but the destroying evil thing is kinda iffy - generally only if Lina's helping him destroy the evil)
A general Gourry stupidity scene would go something like this :
- He's acting normal, like he might be suave and smooth.
- Lina says something that takes an IQ of 70 to understand.
- Gourry doesn't understand it, and says something stupid.
- BLAM!
Gourry, like Lina, is very good at what he does. He may be dumb, but he is one KICKASS swordsman. (he held off like 5 guys at once with one sword in the wedding episode... slayed dozens of monsters in Slayers Next ep.2)
Gourry can do things with his sword like deflect bullets or stab it through an apple that's being thrown at him. He could write graffiti on a stone wall with his sword, blindfolded, in perfect penmanship. (even though he probably can't write his name in pencil worth a damn : )
He's GOOD. He'll even be heroic, given the chance, but destroy his air of heroism in 5 seconds with his mouth.
He won't draw out the Sword of Light unless things are really getting bad. In the gay dragon episode, I was surprised he didn't, but that's okay.
Being a nice guy and fiercely loyal, he will protect Lina to the last, and, in fact, that is his main motivation.
Discrepancies to his behavior :
- In Episode 11 of the first series, he leaves Lina because he doesn't want to wait for a prince. This one's kind of understandable, because Gourry wouldn't want to see a prince on a white horse take [his] Lina away.
Again, I don't know of any more.
