Why be a ham?

I got into Amateur Radio by wanting to be able to transit and receive telemetry signals from rockets.  It turned out that it was much more than I ever imagined!

I wanted to challenge myself to grow in knowledge, and have the privilege to be able to have a radio transceiver to use.  At first, I got a book at the local Radio Shack store, and I studied chapter after chapter... then I moved and got distracted... once I settled down again, and I had time to study, I finished the rest of the chapters in the book.  I looked at www.arrl.org for upcoming exams, and I found one about one week away.  It was over 100 miles away, but it was worth the trip.

On my first attempt, I passed my Technician test. I missed only one question, but I don't know which.  Luckily, there was also a hamfest going on at the same location. I looked at radio after radio.  I looked at new ones, and used ones.  Finally, I bargained for a handheld transceiver (HT), and got it for $40 cash.

In the first month following getting my Technician license, I have made contact with 20 or more different hams.  I am impressed by the friendliness, and the service that many hams have.

I found myself with a leaking radiator in a strange town.  Not knowing where to turn, I called out on my radio.  A friendly voice assured me that he would stay on the frequency with me.  He knew of a great radiator shop, that he called to let them know I was coming.  He gave me turn-by-turn directions until I got there.  He talked to me later that night, and many times since.  He is the president of the local radio club, and he has invited me to the club "shack", and to their next meeting.

While ham radio might bring out the electronics geek in some people, it seems to bring out the desire to communicate with kindness in many...  I have found that my little radio might not only let me send and receive signals to my rockets (some day!), but it has given me a link to a friendly community of radio operators.
