Welcome to the Linux Corner at Compupolis. Here is where you can find information about and resources for the operating system called Linux.

->What is Linux?

On August 25, 1991, a Helsinki, Finland university student named Linus Torvalds announced he was writing an experimental Unix-based operating system for fun. He chose to make his source code freely available to anyone who wanted it, and now the rest is history. Many people around the world have helped to improve the Linux operating system, and distributors such as Red Hat, Inc. (NASDAQ:RHAT) and SuSE have packaged the Linux kernel along with other software to make it easier to install and use Linux.

In the last couple of years, Linus and Linux have gotten a lot of press coverage. There has even been discussion on whether Linux might be the operating system that brings down Microsoft's Windows as the most popular operating system in the world.

Note: Linux is a registered trademark of Linus Torvalds.
