Awards time is here. No, it's not the "Oscar" , "Grammy" or the "Emmy" awards. It's the awards for the World Wide Web where they choose the 'best of the best' of the Internet. It's the "Webby Awards". And here are the nominees and winners which are catogarized into 15 categories.

What the granddaddy of sports sites lacks in sparkle, it makes up for in size: It covers every major sport (and several minor ones--roller hockey fans take note!) from every conceivable angle. Stats addicts can feed their numbers jones, while those who prefer words get acerbic commentary and breaking news. On-air personalities from ESPN (the television network) are here, along with name writers like Frank Deford and Curry Kirkpatrick. If you like sports, this is your home page. |
| Charged | An ultra-cool e-zine devoted to the extreme sports scene. Charged rips with eye-shredding graphics and animation, audio interviews with skateboard dudes, and thoughtful travelogues on eclectic topics such as mountain biking in Morocco. Some of the pieces may be stronger on style than substance, but the site's still a blast to browse. |
| Coach's Edge | What the Web does best: The Coach's Edge uses Shockwave animations to put NBA playbooks in motion. Trenchant play analysis and team reports keep the gee-whiz stuff in perspective, but the animations are still the main draw. At press time, the site was limited to analyzing key plays from last year's NBA finals and semis. But coverage of other teams is promised, along with football. Sure, the site was built to shill play-diagramming software, but who cares? The next time Marv Albert starts waxing rhapsodic about the wonders of Chicago's Triangle-Post, you'll know exactly what he's talking about. |
| Instant Ballpark | An insanely cool, if thoroughly silly, Java animation applet shows the day's games, in real time or replay, pitch by pitch or inning by inning. Sure, it's balky and (like many Java applets) prone to crashes and freezes. But when it works, those stick figures running the bases will send your productivity into a nose dive. |
