" Generally, unless the detail is clear, I've waited to get a bug twice before reporting it.
" If you get a crash, and it's repeatable, the Macsbug app syslog would be greatly appreciated!
First off... When I first started to TRY to play Quake 3A, I encountered some problems. The first was this; I kept getting this damn error about needing four more megs or (kb?) of memory I was frantic. I started ERASING all sorts of things; I even erased Dark Vengeance and some Specular 3D demo programs (no way was I getting rid of Infini-d and Logomotion), but Dark Vengeance alone should have freed up MORE than 4megs of memory. I racked my brain. Oh, (I am TRY to be an Apple techie..!!) maybe the block of memory allocated needs to be refreshed. I restarted my comp, noprob. Message still there. I erased some Quake1 maps (nail-biting) and some two or so mod folders I hardly used, if ever. Then I erased something in the immediate hard-drive folder, before you get to the "applications" or system folder" (this was for sure some quirk) The needed memory had reduced a bit! But I have only about two non-system things in THAT folder... This went on and on, until, out of a lark, I increased the Virtual Memory. The thing was, I had already increased it before.... to 90 megs. The README said 75 megs. At 100 megs of virtual memory, IT WORKED. The damn game opened.. |
I got into a couple of servers --I got into ID Software's ONCE.. ( good god, I can have children and raise them before I can get into THERE) I would go into a couple, it would tell me that I connected, everything was ok.. and would freeze upon loading a map. And this was not like Quake1, where you could press escape and get to the system menubar and go to the desktop. You were completely frozen out. My computer would not even do a force quit. I had to turn the damn thing off. This "gambling" with connecting to servers eventually caused my system to freeze when booting up the extenxions. I had to restart with them off. The three dudes that I talked to at Apple Canada (one guy I could tell was DEFINITELY new) were mostly clueless-- two of them were arguing about some free PPP utility that I had included to connect to my ISP, -- which was working for over a damn month, had tested like they told me to, and was NOT the extension causing my comp to crash at boot-up... I had to re-create a system folder (UGH!). Being paranoid already about not starting my comp properly, the game restarts were traumatizing me... I got into one server, Q3test2-- and stuck with it for a while.. but I wuz itchin' to play test1. When I saw what might be causing the game crashes, I got extremely paranoid and turned everything down. That was probably not all that what was causing the crashes, though, since I started turning everything up when I was in. Reconnected, too... nothing. There w.e.r.e Win32 bugs, too... |
I don't remember what it was that I turned up, maybe I turned up more than one thing at once... I got weird textures on the walls and floors. I mean, everywhere. The parts would flash on and off. I thought to myself "Is that what they mean by dynamic textures?" If I ever had an acid trip, this is what it would probably look like. You can see it in the Teleport screenshot. The walls around the teleport are okay, but... |
OOH, Yeah. THIS one I got.. I even took a screenshot of it. All they have are "three lines" (or "x-y-z coordinate lines"). It was too much. Like a rabbit running around on its hind legs in a tutu in the middle of a WWII war field. |
