Sound Cards

CNET's Top 10 Sound Products

If your games are stuttering in playback of sound or video, go into Control Panel and change the level of hardware acceleration for playback.
Action -I purchased an Action sound card that promised 3D and full duplex and delivered nothing. It didn't work in Windows or DOS, even after an exchange. Do not buy any Action sound card!

Addonics - I tried out one of their Yamaha cards. It was awful. It was nowhere near as good as the Sound Crown I have mentioned before. Implementation is important.

    Applied Magic - Post-Production Audio

Diamond - The Monster Sound has great sound and a great signal-to-noise ratio, but NO NT DRIVERS!

Creative Labs - GET THE SOUND BLASTER LIVE!

Crystal - Another pain in the ass.

Ensoniq - Makers of sound cards and professional keyboards, now a division of Creative Labs. High CPU utilization and compatibility hassles makes this one undesirable, despite low noise.

    Event Electronics

    Mediatrix

OPTi - A last resort sound card. Usually not fun to install. You may not get it to work. Not worth the $12 for the card.

SIIG - Makers of PCI-bus consumer-level sound cards with a HARDWARE wavetable. Software wavetable means "your CPU and RAM"

Turtle Beach - Makers of a home studio music sound card, the Pinnacle Project Studio.

Yamaha- Everyone digs Yamaha's wavetable sounds and 3D positional audio when it is implemented correctly, as it was in the Sound Crown.

VideoLogic - They have a new sound card for the PCI bus.
