Netron Scattering

Use eVS Neutron Spectrometer of ISIS at Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory
Chilton, Didcot, Oxfordshare, OX11 QQX

Measuring the momentum of fluorine and carbon atoms in Liquid and solid C2F6(Hexanfluoroethane, or Freon 116)
from 180 K to 20 K. Observed a orientational order/disorder transition at about 103 K.

Data analyzing was done by using FORTRAN programs in GENIE enviroment


X-ray

Using x-ray facility at Center for Microanalysis of Materials in Material Research Laboratory(MRL) to measurethe lattic parameter of C2F6 at its high-T solid phase of bcc structure.

A LakeShore model DRC-93CA temperature controller was used for temperature control and measurement. It was interface with PC through A NI-488.2 GPID board manufactured by National Instrument . Interface programs were written in C++ or Basic under National Instrument'sLabWindows/CVI enviroment.

We also tried to apply high pressure (150 atmosphere) on our sample to see if lattice parameter would change.


Laser Light Diffraction

This experiment was conducted at my own lab. We measured elastic constant of C2F6 near its melting point at 173 K.
A multimeter that measure the resistant of Pt thermometer was use for temperature control and measurement. It also interfaces with PC through a GPID board.

Two stepping motors were used to move a photomultiplier for light detecting. We used 2 chopper driver to move these two motors. They interface a PC through a controller board. The program that control stepping motors was written in Basic.

Finally, we used a NI-DAQ board for data acquisition. It was manufactured by National Instrument. Program that interfaced it to a PC was written in C++, also under LabWindows enviroment.
