In graphics mode, VAM 4.4 also adds support for the full range of traditional CTOS character map sizes: 80x29, 132x29, 80x34, 132x34, 80x38 and 146x38."
- Unisys CTOS Video Access Method R4.4 SRA.
With the newer Supergen machines, Unisys had a problem. The CTOS Video card would only work with machines with 12MB or less of memory. Customers wanted to use more than the standard 8MB in their CTOS workstations.
The other problem Unisys had was availability of the Weitek 5x86 video chips. These chips were used in the CTOS Videocard, and were coming to the end of the production life. How was Unisys going to solve these problems?
VAM R4.4 was the answer!
VAM R4.4 emulates Bit Mapped graphics on the following systems:
SG1600, SG1650, SG2400, SG2500, SG2600, SG2601, SG3400, SG3500,
SGS4200, SGS4250.
VAM R4.4 does all this by emulating hardware in software.
Display performance, I thought, was somewhat so. A "Page Next" was
more like a slow scroll.
