There’s heaps of free counter lists, so all that are listed here are the ones I’ve used, like GeoCities’ one— visitors so far have come seen this page. Also detailed here are some sites I know of that have those lists.
By far, the easiest to set up are GeoCities’ and Being Seen’s counters—both use source code that doesn’t need any changing before usage. The best for stats are IP-Stat, eXTReMe Tracking, and—to an extent—NedStat Basic (when combined with ReferStat).
Unfortunately, there’s a lot of free sites that have banner advertising built in, which is supposed to be verbotem under GeoCities’ guidelines. Of course, if you only need the number of visitors (or just want a large-sized counter by cheating in the Counter Manager), just use the GeoCities one.
Free counter servers can be dynamic in their performance (though the ones here should be working last time I checked—Tuesday, 07-Jul-98 02:31:49 PDT), so if they can get to your website on GeoCities…
