This is my first attempt at a web page - I intend to learn all I can
(and implement it) and in doing so, pass the info over as I learn it.
That I believe is what the web is for. The page is in text for now,
for speed of loading, as a fast loading web page beats a fancy, smansy
one any day.
My name is Tiger Moodley. I hail from South Africa. This web page has
been set up as an attempt to tell the world about my project, and to
increase the knowledge of the people about MP3z, which is not widely
understood. I will have an overview of it for beginners and the technical
stuff for the boffins.
Note that this project is ongoing and creative ideas are welcome, and no
criticisms (constructive or otherwise will be accepted).
To download any of the files go to my homepage at http://geocities.datacellar.net/Tiger_Moodley
IMPORTANT!
Before using any of the stuff contained in here, you agree that I am held
liable for nothing that you do. You must read the text
file Tiger licence. When you download the files
you agree that you've read the license and you agree to all terms of the
license. If you don't, you can't download the library files. Note: you
are not allowed to distribute the library without
contacting GUWeb.

Download
You will need first
to extract the zip file below and then create yourself a boot stiffy:
Note that the documentation is contained in a file
called readme.txt
Download player.zip
This includes
everything you need to create a complete MP3 player for your machine. All
the files therein are for my setup, if you have a different hardware
configuration (which you probably do), then configure the machine
with your specific drivers where necessary.
You need to follow the ffg steps:
-
Create a boot disk with Win98/Win95 using the command:
format a: /s/u/v:TigMP3Plyr
This allows you to have a proper DOS boot disk.
-
Extract the zip file to the floppy (if you are not using Win98 then copy back your COMMAND.COM from c:\windows\command\).
-
Copy your device driver for your CDROM to the stiffy disk.
-
Copy your device driver for your SOUNDCARD to the stiffy disk.
-
Change your config.sys and autoexec.bat on the stiffy to call your device drivers.
Download the original
XAudio evaluation package
You will need this
package for the documentation of the XAudio functions. Following the link
above you will come to the XAudio homepage. Please download the XAudio
package for DOS.
Unpacking
After downloading
the files you have to unpack (unzip) the files because they are compressed
using the PKZIP utility. Unpack the archives to two different, empty subdirectories.
How to use
Boot up the stiffy and if you have configured your
CDROM device driver and sound card device driver correctly then the system will do the ffg:
Boot into DOS.
Load in the device driver(s) for the CDROM.
Sniff out how many drives you have.
Create a ramdrive with the letter one after your last drive. (if you have no C drive, it will create a C: ramdrive).
Create a drive letter for your CDRom one letter after your RAMDRIVE.
Load the CD ROM drive manager (MSCDEX).
Extract certain files (compressed) from the stiffy to the ramdrive.
Call the MP3 DOS player. (MPXPLAY 1.41)
>>The songs (MP3s) on the CD will be read in.
>>>The songs are loaded into memory (ramdrive-max 16MB) and played off there.
>>>>It takes about 3 seconds to load in a song. Thereafter no CD disk I/O for the duration of the song. (Great for bumps).
You can extract the files manually like so.You can do that with the funny text here
switch.
Example:
pkunzip -o playr
In this example, the
files are not yet available.
Note that even if the files where available, you would still need my permission and the author of the player to use it.
this is really tiny text

HARDWARE SECTION
Update: 01/03/2000
My hardware is listed as below:
Pentium motherboard
with BIOS |
Intel 133 MHz CPU |
64 Mb RAM |
Stiffy (only for booting) |
48x Cyberdrive CD-ROM |
ALS120 Sound Card 16 bit pnp |
ISA VGA card |
xxx 4x20 char LCD from Optrex (backlight) xxx |
xxx *IR module from Ties Bos (optional) xxx |
Keyboard |
Comment on Hardware:
All the components
were salvaged and bought as cheap as possible. Minimim is 486DX-66,
but can't get hold of one. Using PI-133, fine. Will see how it lives
under Windows. So far, it can boot and run Windows - lets see when it
has to play music. VGA card HAS to be in. Had trouble with the
installation of the sound card under mono. Will not try for a while
unless the colour video card dies.
No LCD display supported.
Files for these can be downloaded in the download section.
Optional:
-
IR module specifications
and software is avaible on Ties'
homepage. This software only emulates keypresses that come from a keyboard,
but it most useful in this project, you can either select IR tramsmitter
or home made keypad!
Well, many
people have lots of CD's they want to listen in their car. The normal
choice would be a CD changer, but CD changers are expensive and they can
be a pain to build. Because it's not that easy to build such a
system.
I built my MP3Player to exactly meet my needs, meaning it's a bit
different than most other CAR MP3 players:
It has built-in software support, supports audio CDs, CDz made with
MP3 files, etc...
