Johnson (by Charlotte Johnson Benson, Kentucky Explorer, Jul-Aug 2003)
My grandfather, William Mathis Johnson, was born on May 5, 1881 in
Graves County, Lynnville, Kentucky. His parents were Benjamin Hillery
Johnson and Mary Malvenia Canter Johnson. Both his parents were born in
Graves County. However, his grand-father, was Hillery Benjamin Johnson,
born in 1821 in South Carolina.
William Mathis Johnson was the oldest of six sisters and one brother.
Their names were: Addie Phillips, Benton, Kentucky; Mary Trousdale;
Necie West, Lynnville, Kentucky; Gertie West, Murray, Kentucky; Virgie
Simmons, Murray, Kentucky; Ida Cunningham, Nashville, Tennessee; and
Jessie Johnson, Murray, Kentucky. The family story goes when Pappy (William) was born he was so small they
could put a 50 cent piece of money on his nose and it covered his whole
face, and a dollar bill covered his whole body. They used a man's
handkerchief as a blanket to wrap him in. His bed was a man's shoe box
until he was six or eight weeks old. When he was born they kept hot
packs of salt around him (on each side) for nearly a month. They
carried him for a long time on a pillow. You couldn't handle him
without it, for he was so small and fragile. They fed him with a
medicine dropper. In 1899 he married Myrtie Irene Arnn. She was 13 years old when they
got married. They were married for 49 years, and they had 13 children.
There were five girls and eight boys born in this Johnson family from
the years 1904-1927.They never owned a car but rode with neighbors. William was a tenant
farmer. Farming on land owned by others explains why he and his family
moved around often. Two children were born in Boydsville, Kentucky; two
were born in Williams Mill, Tennessee; five were born in Bell City,
Graves County; two were born in Puryear, Tennessee. My dad was born in
Lynnville, Graves County, Kentucky. After the Johnson family lived in Henry County, Tennessee, they moved to
Benton County, Tennessee to grow tobacco for a landowner. After six
years of working the tobacco fields, William bought 96 acres of
farmland. When he could no longer keep up with the work on the farm
they moved to Camden in Benton County, Tennessee. In 1948, at the age of 66 years old, he died suddenly of a heart attack.
The following remarks were written in his obituary: "The deceased was a
son of Benjamin Hillery Johnson and Mary Malvenia Canter Johnson. Mr.
Johnson came from a fine family of people who were loved and respected
by the people of Lynnville, Kentucky, and too, those wheresoever they
have been privileged to cast their lot and establish their residence."Charlotte Johnson Benson
