Vic's Ancestors
This map shows the distribution of the Argyle surname and its variants in part of Leicestershire.The size of the dots is proportional to the number of recorded events and those shown as red dots are connected with the ARGUILE family, based on surname spelling , given name Chapman or personal knowledge of the Arguile family tree. The blue line shows the migration of my own family from Hinckley to Ratby. The data is taken from the IGI and the earliest occurences are shown. My earliest ancestor to which I can put a date is William Argile bp. 11 Nov. 1673 at Hinckley St. Mary's. His son Robert Argill bp. 16 May 1706 at St. Mary's muddied the waters by changing the surname to Arguile after the birth of his second born daughter Anne Argyle, bp.13 May 1736 at Barwell, and before the birth of third born Elizabeth Arguile, bp.20 Nov.1738 at Barwell. Barwell became the home base for many members of the family and there are still Arguiles living there. Many descendants have adopted the more usual spelling of Argyle. My G.G. Grandfather used Argile but his siblings used Argyle and Arguile, what's in a name. To this day if you come across someone with the Arguile surname they are sure to be descendants of Robert Argill, if they have the christian name of Chapman then they are descendants of Robert's son John Arguile and John's wife Mary Chapman. On the subject of surname changes there are occurences of Argyle and Orgill being interchanged, Orgill is most common around Burton on Trent and Argyle is more common to the North and in the West of Leicestershire as shown on the map.
