Information on the newer models to follow soon.

Basically, I only have access to the 6110 series phone at the moment, and as a result can only say with certainty how to use the ringtone succesfully with these phones. Any other information on this page basically comes from what I think I know (I'm no expert!), so details may be a bit sketchy/inaccurate.

To be able to compose and send ringtone you'll probably need Nokia Datasuite and accompanying cable, unless you are requesting and receiveing ringtone via SMS or the internet. System requirements for Nokia Datasuite are available on the aforementioned link. If there is any software which doesn't require Nokia Datasuite, you can still get a cable from other sources:

If you still have problems, even though you have the right software/hardware, please don't mail me with them (as I said, I'm no expert). Problems and solutions relating to Nokia Datasuite/PC Composer etc. are normally posted on the "alt.cellular.nokia" newsgroup. Try using DejaNews to search through the archives.

If anyone has has success using ringtone with other Nokia phones (not just with PC Composer), or there is some information here which is wrong, please e-mail me so I can make the information available on this page.

To see what the situation is with regards to the ringtone on this site and your Nokia, see below:

NOKIA 3100 series

You won't have any luck with these. This phone does not have it's own memory to store a personal ringtone. The phone does not support "smart messaging", and so it wouldn't understand the ringtone anyway.

NOKIA 3200 series

This phone has a built in composer, so there is no need to upload ringtones using a software and a cable. Tones on this web site can be converted to a format which can be typed in to the Nokia 3210 by using a special program (link on the main page).

NOKIA 5100 series

Same as 3100 series.

NOKIA 6100 series

You need Nokia Datasuite 2.0 and Nokia PC Composer software (which is shipped with Datasuite 2.0). Datasuite has to be installed because it contains the "soft modem" drivers to communicate with your phone. You can connect your phone to the PC with the cable supplied with Datasuite or with infra-red (if your PC/laptop has an infra-red port). I have only uploaded tones with the cable, I'm assuming it works okay with the infra-red link. Can someone confirm this??!
Can also recieve tones via SMS. See the foot of this page for more information.

It appears (from what I have seen on the newsgroups) that uploading ringtones to the 6190 series phones with Datasuite, cable and PC Composer doesn't work. I'm sure someone could shed some more light on this, though.

NOKIA 7100 series

Information to follow.
Can also recieve tones via SMS. See the foot of this page for more information.

NOKIA 8100 series (i)

Not too sure about using PC Composer with this as it is part of Nokia Datasuite 2.0, and this doesn't work with these phones. Again, information would be welcome on this one.
Can also recieve tones via SMS/Operator Services as long as it's an "i" model. See the foot of this page for more information.

NOKIA 8200 series

Information to follow.

NOKIA 8810 series

Current versions of Nokia Datasuite/PC Composer are not compatiable with these phones. So, although it's highly likely that you be able to compose your own ringtones, you'll have to wait until Nokia release some new software for this.
Can also recieve tones via SMS. See the foot of this page for more information.

NOKIA 8850 series

Information to follow.

NOKIA 9000/9100 communicator series

You don't need PC Composer, there is software for making ringtone already built in. Tones for this can be found on the Nokia Communicator Page.
You can recieve tones via SMS. I understand you are also able to compose a ringtone on the communicator and then send it via SMS to any phone mentioned above capable of recieving. See the foot of this page for more information.

Programs that use SMS

If you wan't to try using SMS, then you won't be able to use the PC Composer ringtone on this page I'm afraid. I haven't experimented with these resources much, so you'll have to give it a try.

Nokring is a good program to use, but you will still need a cable to connect to your phone, and I suspect, Nokia Datasuite (please correct me if I'm wrong). You compose your ringtone as you would with PC Composer, upload it to the phone (using the cable), then send it back to yourself via an 8 bit SMSC. Alternatively, send directly to another phone straight through and 8 bit SMSC. There is a similar program called Tone6110.

We have just started to incorporate some tones on this site for the Nokring program which are in RTTTL format (Ringing Tone Text Transfer Language).

There is a Java Composer available as well. I haven't had a chance to look at this yet, but if there is someone out there who has, you know what to do!!

Services that use SMS

There are a number of services available from time to time which can send you ready-made ringtone. This is normally done by either sending a request using a message from your phone, or from a web site. I will update this list as other services become available.

Using your phone:

Send the word "TONES" to "99999" using the SMSC "+358405202999". You will then get 2 messages (in a markup language) which contain a list of ringtones. Edit one of these messages so that the ringtone you want doesn't have a "*" in front of it. Send this back to "99999" (using the same SMSC).
You should then get your chosen ringtone sent to your phone. Obviously, you don't want to keep downloading ringtone only to find that they aren't any good, so I suggest you preview the ringtone mentioned above by going here.
Be aware that there is a "*" missing off the front of the first ringtone in one of the ringtone lists, and it is advisable that you either remove the ringtone or place a "*" in front of it so that you can recieve the other ringtone.

Please remember to change the SMSC back to your default number to keep the traffic down.

Using a web site:

http://www.exigo.se/nokia/nokia_ringtones/ send ringtone to +45, +46, +47, and +354 numbers

Not exactly an exhaustive list, but that's all I know of at the moment, and some sites may not support your operator network
