One who commits suicide,
is (considered as) a wicked person that there is no one worst than him,
as it is said:1 ''and surely the blood of your lives I will require''
For the individual the world was created,
so anyone who destroys a Jewish soul
destroys the whole world2 and therefore one doesn't carry out for him anything,3
one doesn't tear the garment, mourn for him or (say) the funeral oration for him.
However one buries him after cleansing and dressing in the shroud.
The principle of this is that everything for honouring the living we do for him.1) Gen. 9:5.

3) Connected with mourning.
המאבד עצמו לדעת
הוא רשע שאין למעלה ממנו
שנאמר ואך את דמכם לנפשותיהם אדרוש
ובשביל יחיד נברא העולם
וכל המאבד נפש אחת מישראל
מאבד עולם מלא ולכן אין מתעסקין עמו לכל דבר
לא קורעין ולא מתאבלין עליו ואין מספידין אותו
אבל קוברין אותו ומטהרין אותו ומלבישין אותו תכריכין
כללו של דבר כל שהוא משום כבוד החיים עושין לו We assume that people are not wicked,
therefore if we find someone strangled or hanged and the like,
as long as it was possible for someone else
to do this to him (we assume) he didn't do it himself. מסתמא לא מחזיקינן אינשי ברשיעי
ולכן אם נמצא אחד חנוק או תלוי וכדומה
כל שאפשר לתלות שמא אחר
עשה לו זאת לא תלינן ביה A child that committed suicide is considered as (doing it) without understanding.
An adult that seemed to have done it because of depression
or insanity and the like is considered as (acting) without understanding.
Similarly, if he did this act due to compulsion after severe torture,
as did Saul because he was afraid
the Philistines would do whatever they wanted to him.1
Such a one is treated like the rest of the dead
and we don't prevent them (the mourners) from doing all things.1) So he fell on his own sword. (I Sam. 31:4-5).
קטן המאבד את עצמו חשוב שלא לדעת
וכן גדול אם נראה שעשה הדבר מחמת רוח רעה
או שגעון וכדומה הוי שלא לדעת
וכן אם עשה את הדבר מחמת אונס שהיה מתירא מעינויים קשים
כמו שאול שהיה מתירא שמא
יעשו בו הפלשתים כרצונם
הרי הוא כשאר מת
ואין מונעין ממנו שום דבר All who abandoned the accepted way of life,
and they are the people who threw off the yoke of the commandments,
don't include themselves with the rest of Jewry to carry out the commandments,
they consider themselves as free to do what they want,
and also the apostates,1 the informers and the heretics,
on all these one doesn't mourn Onan2 or mourn over them.
Rather their brothers and the rest of their relatives
should put on festive clothes
and eat, drink and be happy on the destruction of those who hate Hashem.
On them it is written:3 ''Do I not hate, O Lord, those that hate You''
and it is said:4 ''When the wicked perish there is jubilation''1) Converts to another religion.

כל הפורשים מדרכי הצבור
והם האנשים שפרקו עול המצוות מעל צוארם
ואין נכללים בכלל ישראל בעשיית המצווה
אלא הרי הם כבני חורים לעצמם
וכן המומרים והמוסרים והאפיקורסים
כל אלו אין אוננים ואין מתאבלין עליהם
אלא אחיהם ושאר קרוביהם
לובשים לבנים ומתעטפים לבנים
ואוכלים ושותים ושמחים על שאבדו שונאו של מקום
ועליהם הכתוב אומר הלא משנאיך ה' אשנא
ואומר באבוד רשעים רנה One who was executed whether by sentence of the authorities or otherwise,
even if he had been an apostate one mourns over him,
because he was killed by the hand of man and did not die naturally,
this is considered as his atonement. אם נהרג בין בדינא דמלכותא בין בענין אחר
אפילו היה מומר מתאבלין עליו
דכיון שנהרג בידי אדם ולא מת כדרך כל הארץ
הוי ליה כפרה One who sinned regularly, even if it was due to his passions,
if he did not confess before his death he is not mourned over.
However if he confessed we mourn over him
even if he was a thief or a robber. מי שהיה רגיל לעשות עבירה אפילו רק לתיאבון ומת
אם לא התודה קודם מותו אין מתאבלין עליו
אבל אם התודה מתאבלין עליו
אפילו היה גנב או גזלן A one or two year old child
that was converted with his father or mother and then died,
one doesn't mourn over him. קטן בן שנה או שנתים
שהמיר עם אביו או עם אמו ומת
אין מתאבלין עליו
