LCDED (LCD Eyeglass Displayer) for Mobile/Wireless
I think:
-
The CRT is the First Generation (1G) displayer for the TV/Video/Computer.
-
The LCD Panel is the Second Generation (2G) displayer for the TV/Video/Computer.
-
The LCDED (LCD Eyeglass Displayer) is the Third Generation (3G) for the
mobile/wireless device, which will have a profound impact on our economy
structures and how we are living and working.
In my last year article, "
Year 2004, Technologies, and Beyond
", one of my opinions is that mobile devices face a dilemma:
-
For the mobility, the display screen has to be small.
-
For the better visual experience, the display screen has to be large.
To solve this problem, we have to adapt technologies to suite to our body,
not the other way around. One possible answer is the LCD Eyeglass Displayer.
The DVD on the Go:
-
According to the news media, Scalar, a Japanese company, planed to release a
product named "Teleglass" in June, 2005.
-
People can attach the Teleglass to a pair of eyeglasses and DVD box to watch the
DVD on the go.
-
The Teleglass resolution is 800 (H) x 225 (V) pixels. The visual effect is
like to watch a 14" TV screen in one meter (about 3' 3") distance.
-
The price of the Teleglass and DVD box is about $500.

I am very happy to read this news because the LCDED, such as, the Teleglass,
removes the last critical hurdle for the mobile/wireless industries to take off.
Soon, the Apple Computer may develop a product for "Video on the Go",
or the Microsoft may work on the mobile game box for "Game on the Go".
But, of course, the Sony may be ahead of both the Apple Computer and
Microsoft. So, the "Amazing Race" is on.
Based on my observation for the hi-tech industries for the last 15 years, I think,
within 10 years, the LCDED global market may reach more than $10 billion/year
and open abundant opportunities for the mobile/wireless
devices/technologies/industries:
-
Video Phone
Wireless service providers have been upgrading their networks to support
3G, such as, the Video Phone. With the LCDED, people can vividly watch
their families and friends far away, which is a cool feature especially
for our military folks and families.
-
TV on the Go
Some wireless carriers provide the TV channels to the cell phone users.
With the LCDED supporting a better visual experience, I think the Mobile
TV can become popular because some people "desperately" want to watch other
"housewives/husbands", like Survivor Amber/Boston Rob, on the go,
just kidding.
-
Video on the Go
The Apple Computer iPod is a successful product because it provides people
"Music on the Go" with an attractive interface and mini size. With the LCDED,
eventually, "Music on the Go" will be shadowed by "Video on the Go" because
some people would like to listen to the music and, at the same time, watch
sultry Paris Hilton washing cars, only joking.
I hope the Apple Computer can form an alliance with the Kodak or other
companies to develop products for "Video on the Go" or Mac mini with the
LCDED.
-
Game on the Go
I think there is a huge potential market for the mobile game box because
some people want to play the game everywhere, at
home/sport event/shopping mall/airport/bus/train/car, etc. With the LCDED,
the mobile game box market can take off.
I hope the Microsoft can form an alliance with the Kodak or other companies
to develop products for "Game on the Go".
-
PDA/SmartPhone/Pocket PC
With the LCDED for the display, the PDA/SmartPhone/Pocket PC itself can
get rid of the LCD screen.
Here is one possible model form:
-
The PDA/SmartPhone/Pocket PC is like a book with two pieces hooked together.
-
When it is closed, the size is about 5" (L) x 4" (W).
-
When it is open horizontally, the size is about 10" (L) x 4" (W) with
two pieces to form a QWERT keyboard.
People can use the keyboard for the input and the LCDED for the display.
-
GPS on the Go
Two years ago, during the beginning of the Iraq War, the unit to which Jessica
Lynch belonged drove to the wrong direction. Several soldiers were killed;
Jessica Lynch and others became the POW.
With the support of the LCDED, eventually, soldiers can watch the GPS map
with one eye and watch out the road with the other eye. Of course, the LCDED
can display other information, such as, the war plan or training manual.
-
Scanning System to Detect the IED (Improvised Explosive Device)
According to the news media, during the Iraq War, about 70% of the US casualties
were suffered from the IED. About 60 years ago, the RADAR was developed to
detect planes; the SONAR was developed to detect submarines. Now, it is time
to develop Scanning Systems to detect IEDs. Then, the LCDED can display the
image.
The LCDED will have a significant impact on how we are living:
-
Multitasking
With the LCDED, people can watch the TV/Video while they are
cooking/cleaning/babysitting/eating/party, etc. So,
"Desperate Housewives/Husbands" will suffer no more, or not.
-
3D Digital Camera by the Year 2010 and 3D TV/Video/Game by 2015
People have been listening to the stereo sound for a long time, finally,
the ubiquitous 3D visual effect is just around the corner.
By the year 2010, I think, people can use the 3D digital camera (with 2 lenses)
to take 3D pictures. People can view 3D pictures through the 3D LCDED (2 LCDEDs)
or 3D LCD Viewer.
I think, by the year 2015, people can watch 3D TV/Video/Game with two video
channels and two LCDEDs.
For more information about the 3D feature, please read my last year article,
"
Year 2004, Technologies, and Beyond
".
I hope the new technology adventure can attract Mr. George Lucas to direct another
episode of "Star Wars". This is not kidding.

Chest-top Computer, a Computer (+ Video/Game) on a Vest,
for Soldiers or College Students
The mobile computer can be mounted to a vest. The keyboard is at the center
of the chest that is why it is called the Chest-top. Next to the one end of
the keyboard, there are batteries, next to the other end of it, a mobile
computer box. The LCDED is at the top of the vest and people can put it to
their heads to watch the display. An antenna is at the bottom of the vest
and can be stuck to the shoe. Most of the electrical wires are embedded
in the vest.
For the traditional computer, people type horizontally.
For the Chest-top Computer, people may type vertically.
Of course, the Video/Game Box can be added to
the vest. The Chest-top Computer is not for everybody but for the busy
people who need to use the computer at anywhere, anytime, such as, soldiers or
college students.
For soldiers, the vest can be bulletproof. By the year 2020, soldiers may use
the Chest-top Computer to control the
Robot Warrior/Robot Vehicle/Robot Helicopter/Drone remotely.
For college students, by the year 2025, they may handle their
Robot Assistants by using the Chest-top Computer.
