The Unit

Look at my Unit

Yep, that thar be The Unit. She's a 1970 Oldsmobile Cutlass S. I bought her for $300. I was running with my track team one day, turned around, and happened to notice this little beauty sitting behind a garage. My '73 was still being restored and I wanted to find an Olds to make super fast for real cheap. I contemplated the idea for quite a while, wondering if I really needed another car. I already had the '73, the Blue Taxi, and my parts car. I couldn't really do much with the parts car, it hadn't been touched for several years and had a Ch*vy I-6 in it!! The Taxi was also a Ch*vy and I wanted nothing to do with the junk 305 it had. I couldn't turn the '73 into a drag racer because we have plans to get rid of the Crapiece when I get the '73 back as a daily driver. So, I went and looked at it. Boy, it was in rough shape. I thought I would never make this thing respectable looking. So I gave up the idea for awhile. Time went on. The thought kept coming back. Every so often, I'd drive down the street to make sure it was still parked behind the garage. Then, one day, it hit me. It doesn't have to look good to be fast!!!! I went and had a conversation with the owner. He told me that it ran, and if I came back in an hour with $300, it'd be mine. So, I went home an talked it over with the folks. They weren't too keen about ANOTHER car being around the house. But, they said it was my money, and I could do what I wanted with it. I came back with my checkbook, and the man had pumped up the tires and boosted the battery. One hitch, the starter only made a click. THE CAR WOULDN'T START!!! I ended up finding one of my friends with his truck and convinced him to tow it home for me. I wrote the check, and towed it home. Then, I replaced the starter in my driveway, charged the battery and, fffffoooommm, it started! I drove it down the back road by my house, no registration, insurance, license plate.... The brake fluid must be seriously low, because I have to almost mash the pedal through the floor to get it to stop. Everytime I hit a bump, the car bounces up and down, sways side to side. If I floor it, I'm overcome by gas fumes. But I still love it.

Uh-oh! Look out 'Stangs!! It's the almighty 350 Rocket 2bbl!!! That's okay. My plans include a 4bbl, cam, headers, dual exhaust, rebuilt TH350 w/cooler and shift kit, and the best gears and posi for the 1/4 mile. From what it looks like, this motor has never been touched. The A/C is disconnected and looks pretty old, so I'm unbolting and removing that whole assembly. I really need to get the leaves and propeller-thingies off the intake......
