Trip to Japan
January 7-17, 1999

After a number of years of talking about taking a trip to visit my friends in Japan, I finally did it!  The stars and planets aligned and schudules seemed to work out well with those I wanted to visit, so I went ahead and booked my tickets!  I left San Francisco on the afternoon of January 7 and arrived at Narita Airport outside of Tokyo on the evening of January 8.  I had ahead of me 9 quick days as a tourist with a full schedule.

Drinking some California wine at Mikiko's apartment just after my arrival in Chiba.

Junichi says, "Konnichiwa!"
This are a sequence of pictures of a really cool serving dish that my lunch came in.  The top portion had a soy-based dip, the middle had some raw tuna, egg, and some vegetables, and the bottom had noodles and seaweed.

Riding the cable car to the top of Mt. Nokogiriyama.

The view of Tokyo Bay from the top of the mountain.

The mountain had many colletions of Buddha statues along the trails, which were part of the Nihonji Temple complex.

Tateyama Castle in Chiba Prefecture sits on a hill overlooking the coastal city of Tateyama, located near the southern tip of Chiba Prefecture.

Junichi and Mikiko get tickets for the subway from Tokyo to Yokohama.  We were on our way to visit Taka and his wife Sue.  Taka was an exchange student who stayed with my family for a semester while attending UW-Eau Cliare.  I was just 11 years old at the time and hadn't seen him in about 10 years.

A non-rush hour view of the Tokyo subway.  Not too bad on a Sunday, but during commute time on a weekday...

Dowtown Yokohama as seen from Taka's car.

Taka with Wren, followed by me and Mikiko.  This is in Yokohama's Chinatown, where we went for a late lunch.

Taka and Sue's son Wren.  Isn't he cute?!

Tokyo Disneyland!  Mikiko and I went there on her 26th birthday.  It was a Monday, so the crowds were pretty thin and we didn't have to wait longer than about 5 minutes for any attraction.

Yep!  It looks pretty much the same as Disneyland here in the United States!  This was part of their big 15th anniversary celebration.
