Trip to Japan
January 7-17, 1999

This page covers days 4, 5 and 6 of my trip.

Taka and me in the Ginza District of Tokyo during the late afternoon.  Ginza is the high-end shopping district in Tokyo, and thus a great place for watching Japanese girls.  ;-)

This is the famous corner in the Ginza as seen at night.

This was a cork jacket (!!!) for sale at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Ginza.  Only $1000!

Here's a closer view of the jacket.  Yep--real cork!

A Shinkansen (The Japanese Bullet Train) zooms through Yokohama station.  I took at later train to Osaka.  Yokohama to Osaka takes about 3 hours and at times reaches speeds of over 160 mph.

My friend Yoko from UW-Eau Claire met me at Shin-Osaka train station.  Yoko has just finished her master's in political science from the University of New York at Buffalo.  She is also engaged to a Korean guy she met there, but her father doesn't know yet.  I hope he doesn't find out here!  :-)

Yoko and I went out to have okanomiyaki for lunch--an Osaka specialty!  It is REALLY delicious and I recommend having some if you ever find yourself in Osaka.

Kenichiro, another former UW-Eau Claire student from Osaka, joined us for the rest of the day.

A street comedian in Osaka.

The next day, Yoko took me to visit Osaka Castle.

At the end of the day I left Osaka for Kyoto and met up with my friends Mari and Yukari.

Mari and Yukari took me to a tradition Kyoto tofu-based dinner.

Here is a close-up shot of some of the food.  Yum! Yum!
