Ladakh

Ladakh is one of the most remote, exquisite and politically sensitive region of southern asia. The spectacular beauty of this region is uncomparable with any other place. The sparcely populated Ladakh is a land of mountains situated at an altitute of above 3500m. The vegetation is negligible due to high altitute, low rainfall and high snowfall. The region is a cold desert.

Ladakh is not an easy going vacation place. The lack of connectivity, difficult terrain and quite common "acute mountain sickness" make it a difficult tourist destination. One must get acclimatized to low oxygen level before engaging in any physical activity. But nonetheless, it is must go place if you love nature despite the problems mentioned above. The phtographs of this page will make you believe this.

Manali to Leh road

Visit to Ladakh is considered incomplete unless you travel by road on Manali to Leh highway. Manali to leh is 473km, it passes through four mountain passes. The first pass is Rohtang pass(3978m) at about 50 km from Manali. Tanglang La pass (5360m) is highest pass on this way, second higlest in the world. The road is open for only three months in summer, rest of the time it is covered by thick snow. There is only one petrol station on entire route, few places for food and night stay, almost no other service but a lot of scenatic beauty to be captured in your camera.

Moray Plains is 45km flat desert plain. This is the only plain of considerable size in this route.

Leh (captial of Ladakh)

Leh is captial of Ladakh and Zanskar regions. Presence of numerous hotels, shops, airport and other amenities make this valley town base station of tourists. Population of Ladakh is mostly Buddhisti. It is evident from high number of monastery and gompas in Ladakh, especially in Leh. Shanti stupa (above image) is one of them.

Pangong tso

Pangong tso is a lake at altitude of 4300m. It is a 130km long lake, width is 3-6km. Two/third of this lake falls in Tibet. The lake freezes in winter. I wish to walk on this lake but reaching there in winter is close to impossible.

Khardung La

khardung La(5602m) is highest motorable pass in the world. This pass connect Siachen with leh through Nubra valley. Siachen is the highest battlefield of the world at a high of above 6000m. A visitor can go up to Nubra valley, not beyond that.
