Years ago some people with the hobby of raytracing decided to start developing a raytracer. POV-Ray is freeware and the complete source code in C is available to allow everyone to compile POV-Ray for virtually every platform and to modify the code or to study it.
It is also possible to release the modified code as long as the author of the modifications will provide support to people that will use the modified version. The exact terms of the licence to distribute modified versions of POV-Ray are in the documentation. The engine is based on a previous existing raytracer called DKB Trace by David K. Buck.
Now POV-Ray is at his third main revision and the last official version is 3.1..
Although it's freeware, POV-Ray has outstanding quality and has several features not found even in commercial packages. Some of his less common features are: halos, volume rendering, caustics, radiosity, cylindrical blobs.
