D-form Tutorials - Handle


This is a basic tutorial to learn how to create a handle of a gear lever from a simple cylinder made up with 2 bicubic patches.

1) Select "Preferences " from File menu and turn off the "Use FastBox preview" checkbox.
2) Turn off perspective preview ("Perspective" item from View menu).
3) Open the file "cylinder.POV" (see Picture 1).

4) Turn on the "Deform selected" option from Options menu.
5) Select the Drag tool from the Button Palette.
6) Shift-drag to select the vertices like in Picture 2.

7) Select "Top" from View menu. (See Picture 3).

8) Select the Z axis with the Axis tool from the Button Palette.
9) Select the Move / Stretch tool from the Button Palette.
10) Command-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 4. (Note that all the handles overlap and show up like one handle only).

11) Select "Front" from View menu.
12) Control-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 5.

13) Select the Drag tool from the Button Palette.
14) Shift-click somewhere in the withe background to deselect all the vertices.
15) Shift-drag to select the vertices like inPicture 6. (You need to make two separate selections to select the vertices to avoid selecting the vertices in the close top of the object).

16) Select the X axis with the Axis tool from the Button Palette.
17) Select the Move / Stretch tool from the Button Palette.
18) Option-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 7.

19) Select "Right" from View menu. (See Picture 8.)

20) Option-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 9.
(Note the now you need to stretch the handle a little less than the previous stretch so it will looks oval from above).

21) Select "Front" from View menu.
22) Deselect all the vertices (see points 13 and 14).
24) Shift-drag to select the vertices like inPicture 10.

25) Select "Centre" from the View menu. The object will translate to centre the selection (see Picture 11). If "Deform selected" is off, the whole object will centre.

26) Select the Hand tool from the Button Palette.
27) Select the Z axis with the Axis tool from the Button Palette.
28) Option-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 12.
(Since Option key is held down the object rotate only around the active axis).

29) Turn off the "Deform selected" option from Options menu.
30) Select "Centre" from the Tools menu.
31) Deselect all the vertices (see points 13 and 14).
32) Shift-drag to select the vertices like inPicture 13

33) Turn on the "Deform selected" option from Options menu.
34) Select the Move / Stretch tool from the Button Palette.
35) Select the X axis with the Axis tool from the Button Palette.
36) Option-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 14.
(This to stretch a little more the handle).

37) Deselect all the vertices (see points 13 and 14).
38) Shift-drag to select the vertices like inPicture 15.

39) Select "Bottom" from View menu. (See Picture 16.)

40) Select the Move / Stretch tool from the Button Palette.
41) Select the Z axis with the Axis tool from the Button Palette.
42) Control-drag in the window until you obtain the result showed in Picture 17.
