Some More Snaps
This is the Statue Of Liberty as seen from the ferry. The ferry leaves from Battery Park, which is located in the downtown part of Manhattan and goes till Liberty Island. The Island is very small as is evident from the picture. The ferry takes $6 and drops you at Liberty Island and you can go into the Statue and go right up till the crown. Inside the status are elevators which take you till the crown. Earlier you could also go to the Torch, but the authorities have closed it now. The statue is really huge even though it does’nt look like it.
This is the rental car that Pankaj had got when he came here. The car is a Ford Contour and is pretty powerful and impressive. Behind us and the car is the apartment complex where I stay. We are in the parking lot at this point of time.
This is what Manhattan looks like from the sea. I am standing on the ferry that takes us to Liberty Island. Behind me and towards the left of the picture and the Twin Towers of the World Trade Centre...the tallest building in the United States. Manhattan looks like a concrete jungle and the buildings there are so high that when u walk in the streets of Manhattan you feel like midgets..walking in a giant world !! The World Trade Centre is the beginning of the famous Wall Street, the financial street of the world, where are all the major financial companies have their offices.
Another snap with the Statue of Liberty. The snap on the right is Times Square as it looks at night. Unfortunately the camera cud not capture all the lights and the true beauty of the place. Times Square is the central part of Manhattan and is always the center of all activity. All celebrations, demonstrations and any other social and cultural events are held at this location. Behind me is a very tall building, and there are huge TV screens here which keep showing advertisements and other important information. Reuters is very soon going to open its own office in Times Square. The world’s largest Christmas Tree is put up here during Christmas.
Both of us on the ferry, and yet another view of Manhattan from the behind. Pankaj and I had gone to Manhattan to do some bit of sightseeing. This is the Atlantic Ocean and we are about a mile away from shore. From here the city looks like a collection of playing blocks. This ferry also goes to Ellis Island. Ellis Island was the island where the immigrants to the US first landed when New York was being built. They landed at the island and were checked for any diseases and only then allowed to enter into the country. Ellis Island also houses a Museum and old government buildings.
