Books I've Read

Here's the start of a list of books I've read and recommend (or occasionally, steering clear of).
As an Amazon books associate, I've also provided links to Amazon books to enable you to purchase any of these on line.

Stephen King

Picture of Stephen King Just about everything (well, particularly his older stuff and the ones where he's stuck with the horror genre). Find more about Stephen King here.

Michael Crichton

Picture of Michael Crichton Probably my current favourite author; I've been rapt in just about every book of his, such as:

Jurassic ParkYou've seen the movie. Read the excellent book!Purchase
The Lost World Not one of his better books in my opinion - it really didn't add much new to the Jurassic Park theme. I've just been to see the movie though and thoroughly enjoyed it - fantastic sets and effects.Purchase
DisclosureAlso made into a good movie, starring the delicious Demi Moore.Purchase
AirframeA great read, similar in feel to Disclosure, with a corporate setting. Bound to be a movie before long. (Hey, just found an Internet Movie Database entry for this which says that Demi Moore will star in it!)Purchase
Rising SunAlso not a bad movie, starring Sean Connery in a part that Michael Crichton has in mind for him when he wrote the book.Purchase
CongoThis too became a movie - but although the book was very good, the movie basically sucked. Purchase
SphereHey this too was made into a movie although I haven't seen this one yet (didn't stay long on the big screen). Given the success of recent movies based on Michael Crichton's books they're now going back to film some of his older stuff. Purchase
Binary Purchase
Five PatientsThis one I'd steer clear of. Though it is advertised as being "by the creator of ER", it probably won't really appeal to the same audience. Rather than being five medical stories it is really five essays based around different medical case studies. Maybe of interest if you are in the health profession but even then it is probably rather dated.Purchase
The Terminal ManAlso a movie.Purchase
The Andromeda StrainAlso a movie.Purchase
Eaters of the DeadGee, even this is set to become a movie - titled The 13th Warrior!Purchase
A Case of NeedPurchase

Patricia Cornwell

Non fiction - Computer Industry

Jerry KaplanStartup Very interesting reading. Jerry writes about his experience with starting up a new high-tech Silicon Valley company, Go Corporation. Go Corp was established to develop a pen based operating system and computer. They had some great ideas and technology, but despite a couple of rounds of venture capital financing, didn't quite make it. Microsoft certainly didn't help!Purchase
Robert X. CringelyAccidental EmpiresAbout the Silicon Valley nerds and how they got to be rich. This book was later used as the basis of a television series, "Revenge of the Nerds"Purchase
Paul CarrollBig Blues:
The Unmaking of IBM
Interesting read about how IBM lost its position of dominance of the computer industryPurchase
Clifford StollSilicon Snake OilDue to the immense popularity of Cliff's first book (see below), he was probably hounded by his publishers to come up with something else. This was it. Seems to me that he had a couple of ideas, well maybe a few more. Enough for a dozen pages or so perhaps. Anyway, he's stretched it out into a whole book. His publishers are probably happy though. Me? I was disappointed. He comes across as trying to be controversial for the sake of it. We should be spending more money on real books for libraries. Yeah, of course. So what. For someone who wants to be seen as a luddite and anti-capitalist he sure has made a heap of money out of writing about technology, computers and the internet!Purchase

Non fiction - Technical/Programming

Steve MaguireWriting Solid CodeA very good book containing lots of tips on how to write robust (mainly C) code.Purchase

Bertrand MeyerObject Oriented Software Construction The best explanation of object oriented concepts I've seen.Purchase
David FlanaganJava in a Nutshell A good reference to the Java language and classes.Purchase
David FlanaganJavascript : The Definitive Guide A good reference to the JavaScript language.Purchase
