In the Moonlight
Dave Short

In the moonlight,
When the stars
Pinpoints of fire
Come out to play candelabra games
But are only supporting players
To the real
Star,

The hours seem slower, but
Somehow right.

And when the shimmer of strands
dazzling
Play out to this world (but to only two eyes)
Heaven need not rest above
The stars:
It is right here
In the moonlight.

Celestial spheres
- Mars, Saturn, Polaris -
Play second stage to the
Orbs, two of them,
On the face of Venus.

The northern lights
An opening act
For the real show. The face
Of the moon, dim in
Comparison.

A comet, missed as an auto
On Main Street. Indistinct!
For I see
Beauty
Smile.

As years wind on to notime
The stars dance,
Impermanent. Millions of years
Bring new nighttime starscapes.
But this moment is fixed in my mind
My heart
Forever.

In the moonlight,
In the roomlight,
She shines, goddess eternal.
Build me a roof to block out the stars
- I need not see them -
The real constellation
Here to touch
In the moonlight.
