Wash asparagus, cut off tough, woody bottom of each stalk.
Peel stalks if they are tough.
Put a small amount of water in a covered frypan.
Add asparagus to boiling water.
Steam asparagus about 5 minutes or until bottoms are tender when pierced
Drain water.
Top with butter, salt & pepper.
When I was a kid, we only ever had asparagus out of a can and I always hated it. I recently discovered asparagus and now I think it is actually pretty good. Of course, it has to be very fresh and tender. It is best early in the spring.
