While following a path through the woods, going along a bank of a river or when your eye takes in the whole valley from the top of a mountain did you ever feel as being a real part of nature?

Even in MONTEGABBIONE, located in the ever green Umbria, in the very heart of Italy, it’s possible to make amatorial mini-trekking, 4-6 hours long, enough to learn history, culture, flora and fauna of an unusual land, still unchanged from proto-historical era. On the surrounding hills you can visit the rest of ancient, dry stones fortresses, built between the Bronze Age and the Iron Age.

Montegabbione is a very little town with only 1252 inhabitans; 10% of them are foreigners. It is situated at an altitude of 594 m. above sea level on one of the hills of the pre-Appennines, in a particularly strategic position: halfway between Rome and Florence (about 130 km. from both), between Orvieto and Perugia (about 35 km. from each one), between the lakes of Bolsena and the Trasimene (circa 60 KM.).
From a historical point of view the town, except for the hamlet of Faiolo which dates to more recent times, is part of the system of fortresses to which the castles of Montegiove and Casteldifiori still bear witness. Montegabbione, in particular, is an outstanding example, with the town enclosed in solid medieval walls with a network of streets laid out at right angles around a central square, protected by the lookout towers and the castle. Outside the walls is the church of the Madonna delle Grazie, erected in 1625 on a pre-existing chapel and, not far from the town, the ruins of the Abbey of Aqualta and the Franciscan convent of the Scarzuola together with the architectural fantasies of Tommaso Buzzi. The landscape around Montegabbione is also particularly beautiful and abounds in natural resources traditionally exploited in agriculture, with the processing of meat as one of the principal industries.
