"The Aurora Borealis: A Fairy Tale For Big People"
#78705
Joel comes faces to face with the legendary "Adam," a Bigfoot-like
character while Chris Stevens meets a brother he didn't know he had
-- a black Rastafarian -- on Mca TV International's "NOTHERN
EXPOSURE" episode entitled "The Aurora Borealis: A Fairly Tale For Big
People." The episode was written by Charles Rosin and directed by
Peter O'Fallon.
As the townspeople adjust to living with daylight twenty-four hours a
day, Chris is busily working on his metal sculpture and is intent on
completing it for the impending Northern Lights. Meanwhile, Bernard,
a Rastafarian, rolls into Cicely on his Harley-Davidson following a
strange dream which causes him to quit his job with the I.R.S. and
leave Portland. Chris and Bernard insantly click and Bernard offers
to help Chris finish the sulpture. They are surprised by the
phenomenom that Bernard left Portland the same day Chris started the
sculpture. Thw two do not notice that they share the same physical
mannerism and work in unison on a subconscious level. While playing
golf, Joel comes across an enormous footprint, and Ed tells him about
the legend of Adam, a huge, green, Bigfoot-like creature. Of course,
no one has ever actually seen Adam but they know he exists. Joel
becomes paranoid and has Maggie put new locks on his cabin. While
returning from a house call with Ranger Burns, Joel's truck breaks
down in the middle of the forest. He falls asleep in the truck and
is awakened by a huge, hairy survivalist who runs back into the
forest. Joel screams out for help and the survivalist leads him to
his cave -- where he cooks Joel a gourmet meal. Joel is surprised
that this man is an expert cook of Mandarin Cuisine and knows of the
Five Flavors Cafe in New York City. The survivalist tells Joel he is
Adam, and he doesn't like people. Joel patronizes Adam until he
looks down at his huge bare feet. Joel learns that Adam retired to
the wilderness after serving in Vietnam.
Following dinner, Adam teaches Joel to prepare a special Mandarin
dish. In the morning, Joel awakens to find a cup of coffe ready,
but Adam is nowhere to be found. Joel makes the trek to his truck
where he finds his keys in the ignition. He is surprised when it
starts up. Joel finds the townspeople in the tavern, talking about
the succesful unveiling of Chirs and Bernard's Aurora Borealis
sculpture. The taver falls silent when Joel announces that he met
Adam and recounts his experience. No one believes Joel, except for
Chris and Bernard. While discussing their respective fathers, both
of whom traveled extensively, Chris and Bernard find out that they
were both born in July 3, 1963. They quicly exchange photograps of
their fathers -- and realize they had the same father! Chris and
Bernard watch in awe as the glow of the brilliant and colorful Aurora
Borealis appears in the night sky. Chris tells Bernard that he
always felt he had a brother, and Bernard jokingly replies he always
knew he had a 'sister' somewhere. Chris agrees to visit Bernard in
Portland, and they pledge to remember the other when they watch for
the Aurora Borealis. They share a brotherly hug, and Bernard leaves
on his Harley. Meanwhile, in his frustration, Joel takes Maggie and
Ed to Adam's cave. Unfortunately, it is empty! Joel begins to
wonder if it was all a dream -- until Ed finds a garlic press hidden
in one of the cracks.
