Information about the IRC chat room
On the 10th of August 1996, hey I wonder if this page will last long enough for that to sound a long time ago, we created our own chat room. Cricky and Noxas did the hard part of drinking and chatting... Balinor did the easy part of installing and configuring the bots and actually bringing the original room into existence
J
The room should remain open 24hours 365days a year... discounting time of due to splits, floods (Vodka ones are OK), server trouble, and acts of god or Balinor. The room was originally created on the Uppernet range of servers and was maintained by two EggDrop bots called Z_KT and Z_GG. The bots were designed to monitor the behavior in the room and automatically protect the room from infringement of the rules.
The room was moved March 1999 to the Galaxynet range of servers, only one bot now operates and this bot simply keeps the room open and allows Cricky or Noxas to moderate the room.
We understand that some people may object to the room being moderated in this way and are willing to listen to any criticism or suggestions please mail
Noxas with your comments.The room is open for all to enjoy as long as they are willing to follow the rooms' rules. Hopefully we will see you there sometime and hope that you will join in with the chat and fun that the room was designed to promote.
Cricky and Noxas cordly invite you to join the
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
IRC room #Cricky&Noxas
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
We have decided to construct and run a moderated IRC room. This room will have house rules that our guests are required to follow to ensure everyone's enjoyment. Persistently not following the rules will result in removal from the room and a three-hour ban. The bots will automatically impose this ban.
The IRC room #Cricky&Noxas Rules
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
1) The room is moderated by Cricky, Noxas and one private bot... only they will have operator status in the room. (We wish to run a moderated room for the protection of our guests)
2) Everyone must respect each other's feelings and not allow animosity to be expressed in the room. (We welcome play fighting and having a laugh as long as it does not hurt others)
3) No bots, clones, scripts, flooding or any other devices or behavior which cause problems for the room will be allowed.
4) Everyone must at all times have fun and enjoy themselves... unless they are really pissed off in which case they can cry a lot... *lol*
We have found your company to be pleasurable and hope that we can enjoy spending time playing and chatting with y'all for many more decades... Noxas would say centuries but then y'all have an idea how pickled my kidneys are *smile*
The room has been created to provide a safe place for us all to enjoy. The bots will keep it running even if one of us is not there... yes it is possible that we both may not be there - we do intend to meet and spend time together off-line *grin*
Neither of us desire to forcefully impose bureaucracy on guests or to create a stuffy or formal room. We hope to have a vibrant and fun place for people to meet and enjoy each other's company... signed Adolf Noxas and Genghis Cricky *lol*
Hopefully you will find the room to be a place where you feel at home and at peace, both of us wishes for everyone to feel welcome and comfortable... if you don't wish to join us then we sadly acknowledge your views and hope to see you somewhere more chaotic.
Yours in hope of many happy hours chatting...
Cricky and Noxas
Hello Gang
First things first... after suffering a computer virus I lost all my e-mail addresses and have had to rebuild this mailing list. If you are aware of anyone that this mail is suitable for but has not received it, then please pass me their e-mail address and I will add them to the list for future events. If anyone would prefer not to receive these e-mails in future then please just let me know and I will remove you from the mailing list, my apologies for disturbing you.
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ off-line/on-line Party!!!
The reason for this mail is to invite you to another party... this party should be something quite special. Cricky is visiting the UK and to celebrate I am throwing an on-line/off-line party, there will hopefully be lots of guests off-line and two links to the net for people to chat on-line. The party will be held on Saturday the 30th of November 96 and is located in Hockley, near Southend, in the UK.
Sorry that I have left it so late to write this mail but work has prevented me from organizing the party and writing sooner. Currently the following people have confirmed they will be attending off-line Cricky (USA), Albie (Italy), Spectre (Sweden), and from the UK Eviem, Mad_Jock, Julie, Tunes and of course myself :o). If anyone is interested in attending the party off-line then please contact me at "
Noxas@geocities.com"... there is a limit regarding the accommodations (but plenty of guesthouses and hotels are available nearby in Southend). For the night of the party, accommodation is available if you are happy to share the floor with everyone else.The party will start around 20:00 GMT (UK) time... and will end whenever the last person standing decides to call it a night. Further details on local hotel costs and directions will be passed to those who contact me and request them. I hope that a number of you will make the effort to come visit and meet each other off-line... lets party!!!
~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ Other news
Thanks to all of you who attended Cricky's and my on-line engagement party... I hope you had as much fun as we did. Nancy's present, a web page dedicated to marriage, has been permanently added to the Country Cabin web site so any that did not get a chance to see it at the party can take a look now :o)
The original .wav files collected for the party have been expanded... thanks to Hart, Eviem, Mad_Jock, and Spectre. They are now nearly 9 Megs in size. If you have any new .wav files for me, please don't e-mail them to me. My mail server is taking a beating as it is so instead contact me and I will arrange to transfer them at a later date. Balinor has kindly agreed to store the .zip files for downloading on his server and has created links from his home page... "
http://wizard.memory.se". You can also find the links on the City Apartment site.Due to a lot of overtime that I have been doing recently, I have brought some new hardware and now have a scanner... I have scanned a few pics of Albie's visit to the UK and they are available at the Country cabin site. Any rumors that have been going around regarding Albie and me sharing a hotel bed are purely malicious and very true *lol*. I will add pics of Mad_Jock, Julie, Eviem and my get together when the photos are available for scanning... and the others have refused to pay up to prevent me showing them *smile*
Eviem has told me that Beast Enders will not be on for a while as she and Arclight are working on moving it to an IRC room. Stay tuned, it will return when they finalize the details. For any of you who do not know about Beast Enders it is an interactive soap opera that many of us have had great fun performing in. More details on Beast Enders can be found at the City Apartment site.
Last but not least... Albie has recently changed his homepages URL, I am sure that most of you have been informed of the change but just in case here it is again... "
http://193.207.119.65/~albie/".
Hello Gang
PARTY PARTY PARTY !!!
Arrangements for the European on & off-line party is moving along swiftly now so I thought I would write you a quick newsletter to check to see if anymore of you are interested in making the effort to come along :)
So far the people who have booked flights, made arrangements, or shown great interest are; Cricky (USA), Eviem, Albie (Italy), Roy (USA), Hart (Canada), Spectre (Sweden), Balinor (Sweden), Catherine, Walker, Tunes, Kinner, Mad Jock, Julia, SvenJo, Amanda & Chris.
(Plus a few non internet users)
This could be your only chance for a long time to meet these people... I will have to add up the miles traveled by every one to come to this party :)
If you are interested in attending then please drop me a mail message so that I can make arrangements for accommodation. The party is on Saturday the 30th November 96... not long I know. Most people are arriving Friday, flying back on Monday and staying in Southend. There is room for everyone to stay at the house on the party night, as long as you do not mind using sleeping bags. Also there is some spare floor space for the Friday and Sunday nights :)
PHOTOS of Mad Jock, Julia, Eviem, and me
I have just finished updating the City Apartment to smarten the layout up and to add a new section called "Photo Gallery". The Gallery has the pictures of Albie's visit to the UK which have already been shown elsewhere and some new pics never before seen on the net... unless you have some black-market ones sent out by Eviem *grin*. The new photos were taken when MJ, Julia, Eviem and me all got together for a weekend of eating, drinking and falling over a lot.
Hope you are all feeling fine and well... see you on-line soon :)
Hello Gang
As this newsletter covers a large number of different items I will try to keep it brief. I have been asked to pass on a number of messages to the group as a whole and am happy to do so. If anyone has a message that they wish me to include in a newsletter then just drop me a mail and I will try to add it to the next newsletter :)
VOTE ON THE FUTURE OF #TJ
Most of you are hopefully aware of the recent vote that was held, the details can now be found at the City Apartment. This was due to a number of fights that took place in the Uppernet IRC chat room #TJ. A group of people wished to place a bot in the room to curb the fighting that was taking place... in a bid to bring democracy to the situation I suggested that a vote by the people who use the room take place.
There were 33 votes in total cast and 19 votes YES for a bot controlling the room and 14 votes NO against a bot controlling the room. The majority desired for a bot to control the room, so I passed on the results to the server administrators who had offered to provide a bot. I have not heard anything so far and will pass on more information when I have it.
TUNES FRIEND WOULD LIKE SOME HELP
A friend of Tunes is carrying out a survey for their A-Levels (UK education qualification) and would be grateful if as many of you as possible could provide the data. You can find the survey at URL;
http://www.cybercor.demon.co.uk/survey.html
Please go along and spend the little time it takes to complete the survey and provide them with the information they need for their project. I am sure that a few of you have done this kind of thing before, but it doesn't hurt and would help them a great deal... thanks :)
LATEST ON ROY'S RESEARCH PROJECT
Some of you are aware that Roy has been carrying out a research project regarding relationships on the internet. He has been collecting data... well for as long as I have known him.
He recently submitted his research data for review and had an amazing response... it appears that no one, had done this type of research. He has been told by at least 35 professors from all around the country that the research he is doing on the relationships in the Hugging Room is "original", "never done before" and a "brilliant discovery in the social sciences." It is considered leading edge stuff, and it may lead to the establishment of an entirely new academic discipline.
He wishes to emphasize that this would not be possible without the people of The Hugging Room, is not just himself. It is all the people that use The Hugging Room and he asked me to pass on his thanks and appreciate to us all. In his own words "They may become known in scientific literature of the social sciences as the first identified and researched people on the Internet. They are making a significant and important contribution about what is happening on the new frontier of the Internet."
I am sure you will all agree with me that we wish Roy the best of luck with his research and will provide what ever help we can if he requests it... keep up the hard work Roy :)
EMPLOYMENT FOR A WEBPAGE DESIGNER IN THE UK
The Gatton Consulting Group are looking for an internet WebPages designer for a 3-6 months assignment based in Cambridge (UK). The work will involve HTML, Macromedia Director, Internet Explorer and Doby photoshop and pagemill. If you are available within the next few weeks then mail me with your CV and I will pass on the details. They want someone fast... this could be your chance to for juicy contract as there is a real shortage of web designers out there :)
WELCOME BACK EVIE & BRIGHTEYES
Eviem has returned from her trip to Canada and the States and is home safe and sound. There should be lots of pictures available as soon as I can pry them from her hands and put them onto my scanner... Welcome home Eviem.
BrightEyes has returned from her trip in the other direction, spending time wandering around Europe, Paris appears to have been a hilight of the trip. Nice to see you back on-line... next time take some time out to mail a few of us as we got worried about what happened to you when we had not heard anything for a while :)
Hope you are all feeling fine and well... see you on-line soon :)
Hello Gang
Sorry that it has been so long since the last newsletter but as most of you are probably aware I have been a little busy with organizing the European party, truth be told I have been busy having fun with Cricky whilst she was visiting the UK *smile*. Sorry for the length of this Newsletter... consider it an extra large Xmas issue :)
THE EUROPEAN PARTY
Well from the comments I have received everyone that made the effort to come along really enjoyed them selves. I know that I had a great time, I just wished I could remember all of it *grin*. Thanks to all of you who made the effort to come to the party in person and to those of you who joined the party on-line, it would have been a boring party with out you all. Special thanks to Eviem for letting me use her house... everyone behaved themselves wonderfully so perhaps she will let me do it again sometime *wicked smile*.
PARTY PICS
Cricky and myself have developed 7 rolls of photos from the party... some very interesting photos are amongst that lot *grin*. There are another 7 rolls to be developed of other events during her visit... including the now infamous "Cricky & Noxas get drunk" episode *lol*.
Tunes has offered to host the official party site which will have most of the party pics... as soon as I get them scanned and write the HTML to display them. I will happily include links from the site to any one else's party pages, just give me the URL's to include. If you do not have sufficient space on your sites to put the pictures up then contact me and I will try to arrange to have them included on the site. If you do not have access to a scanner then you can send me a set of pics and I will scan them for you... no promises as to how quickly I will get this done.
KARNA's SKI TRIP
Karna has passed me a note about her ski trip to be included in this newsletter, sadly I am not able to attend but it sounds like a lot of fun. If any of you wish to pass on a message to the group then I am happy to include them in the Newsletter, just drop me a note letting me know what you wish to have included :)
Over to Karna.......
Ok peoples, here is my last written notice about the ski trip and my IRC meet.. or get together... SO PAY ATTENTION.... I would like to have AT LEAST 10 people so it doesn't seem like I'm a complete failure at planning... but as we all know, my idea calls for you all at a bad time...i.e. after Christmas and bills and work times blah blah blah.... But I think winter can and does sometimes get terribly depressing....and I personally would enjoy having a chance to meet everyone I've been talking to for sooooooooooooooooooooo long.....
I'll cut to the chase and stop wasting lines and lines of our precious newsletter ;)
My meet is scheduled for January 11th... I don't care when you arrive JUST GET HERE! by that Saturday so we can all go skiing...(c'mon! pack up those bags willya and come see me!) I have the prices for ski rentals, and if you have ice skates bring them! We will be going to Billiards if everyone so desires... the guys can impress the ladies with their abilities to play pool and the ladies can beat the men and watch them be jealous as they beat the guys ;)
Ice skating while holding each other up would be fun don't worry Cricky I won't let you fall! Here's the facts... You can stay at Rodneys house with myself, him and my mom or you can stay at a hotel or motel not more than a few blocks from his place, a short drive down the road and hang out with us every night! don't worry only a few things will cost you money... Like getting a plane ticket or gas money ;)
On Saturday (my birthday) I have the plan of getting up at 7AM and leaving for Wahalla where we will either rent a van or something and go for 2 hours till we hit skiing. Thanks to Hart I know when the ski lifts start, and how much it goes to rent.
Frost Fire; Opens at 9AM, lifts start going at 9:30AM and closes at 4:30PM (we have plenty of time to ski ourselves silly! or until we're blue in the face). $18.00 day lift rental cost (whatever that means I'll figure it out later). $14.00 for ski, poles, and boots rental (TOLD YA IT WOULDNT COST MUCH!). No snowboard rentals (Sorry snowboarders you'll just have to bring your own or ski). Bar & Restaurant kicks people out at 4:30PM (I didn't ask for that, Hart did)
BTW. I wouldn't advise of drinking as would most people... maybe one is ok if you can handle it I wouldn't want you guys to get injured.
They have 2 chairlifts (double) 1 triple lift, and a tow bar; Tow bar is on the bunny hill ;) They have skiing for experts, novices, and beginners... If you don't know how to ski.. don't worry, its simple... I taught myself ;) but I'm not the best skier in the world either. Any how... I don't mind when you get here but make sure it's before the 11th... I have Billiards planned, snow ball fights (so dress warmly), snowman making, ice-skating and whatever else we wanna do...
Don't worry... just come visit for a cure for your winter blues!!!!!!
Hoping to see you snowy and rosy!
WAIZFISZ: TO CHANGE OR NOT TO CHANGE
Recently... well actually ages ago but I did explain why it had been so long for this Newsletter to come out... WaizFisZ contemplated changing his nick. He held a vote amongst people that know him, and some that did not, to decide if he should change his name to IcePrince. For those of you who that have had sleepless nights wondering what the votes where... here they are.
The results from the vote to change or not to change were:
6 - Keep WaizFisZ.....
1 - Do as you like (Hart)
1 - Change it to Lullo!!!!! (Albie)
1 - I don't care just let me know *g* (Noxas)
There was a story of how to he came by the name WaizFisZ... a long and noble quest in strange realms. Unfortunately during a tidy up I made the mistake of putting it somewhere safe and lost it, sorry Waiz. So hopefully WaizFisZ will search out his copy... or create a new one and allow me to publish his heroic quest to find a name in the next Newsletter.
XMAS ON-LINE PARTY OR PARTIES
Festive greetings to one and all... I am sure that many of you are making your plans for the holidays. I hope to get to see all of you over the break and think that an on-line Xmas party would be a great way of ensuring that I do. The question is who is going to organize one... who is willing to pick a suitable date, time and location.
I warn you; if no one steps forward you will end up with me organizing one badly at the last minute... I am going to be busy for the next couple of weeks catching up with taking 3 weeks off work. If any of you have already made some arrangements then let me know and I will pass on the details to everyone... assuming you want to run the risk of being overwhelmed with festive party go'ers :)
SNOW BALL FIGHT
Having been pelted by snow balls... Loulou got the first hit in... I thought I should throw a super big one at you all. It's just a bit of fun but please don't use this list to send snowballs at the gang... or at least some of us will be buried in a e-mail snow mountain. Whilst I am on this point due to a mistake made by me this list was used regarding a vote in #Tj... I apologias for the nuisance this caused. This list is intended to only be used for the Newsletter and should not be used by anyone else... thanks :)
Hello Gang
It has been quite a while since the last newsletter, I figured it would be better to only mail you when there is something worth telling you. I ask that people please do not use this mailing list for their own mails, people have asked to only receive the occasional Newsletter from me and not mass mails from others. If you have something that you think is suitable then mail it to me and I will send out with the next newsletter:)
AMERICAN OFF-LINE PARTY
Considering how successful the European off-line party was, it become inevitable that I would arrange another off-line party. It is time for us to gather and meet each other at the "American off-line party!!!". You will be able to see better than 24 bit animated gifs, hear better then 3D True Wave sound, feel better then an ergonomic keyboard, and smell ... hmm... ok that one will not always be better then on-line :)
I hope that most of you have managed to recover from the expenditure of X-mas, and are able and willing to start saving for a trip to attend the party. It will hopefully be even bigger and better then last time. The more of you that attend, will cause even more of you to join in and come along. Which means even more of you will come and that will mean more and more and more... if you know what I mean.
The party is to be held at Cricky's house in Goose Creek near Charleston, South Carolina in the good old US of A (not sure about the good yet and I am certain that the old is relatively inaccurate). It is being held on Saturday Evening 25th October 1997. There will be a snack buffet but please bring your own booze. Everyone is invited but please make sure that you contact Cricky before the party to let us know that you are attending. Like the European party there will be events organized, or should I say disorganized, from Friday morning through to the Sunday Evening.
The most suitable accommodation for the party, it is ?? miles from Charleston but only half a mile from Crickys, is the Econo Lodge Motel. There is some very limited room for Friday night at the house, Saturday night all are welcome as long as they are happy sleeping on the floor, the dogs and cats will help keep you warm :)
Econo Lodge Motel, 401 North Goose Creek, Boulevard, Goose Creek, SC 29445, USA
Tel: 803-797-8200. If dialing from Europe dial 001-803-797-8200
2 beds - $45.00 plus tax per night.
1 bed - $36.00 plus tax per night.
The rates are subject to change as the time gets closer to October 24th.
If you need any assistance regarding the party then mail Cricky at Cricky@geocities.com.
WEB SITES, E-MAILS, MAILING LIST
As you are all hopefully aware I have changed my e-mail address recently and have been busy updating the web sites. There are a few pictures of Cricky's pets and a rather fuzzy one of Loulou wearing one of the strangest dresses I have ever seen. I still have a 6 inch pile of party photos to scan, unfortunately the one of Cricky drunk did not come out (I was too drunk to take a straight photo by that time).
Whilst updating the site I discovered that some of you have changed your e-mail addresses and URL's. I managed to track down the new e-mail addresses for most, but I have sadly lost contact with "Versus". So if any of you see Versus could you ask them to mail me so that I can send them the newsletter... thanks. On that note if you are aware of a regular visitor to #Cricky&Noxas who is not currently receiving the newsletter then why not also ask them to mail me.
I would also like to update the links I have for your homepages, if you have a web site then please pass me the URL. I understand that Acidrain has already asked a number of you for your URL's, hopefully he will send me the ones he has and I will pass on to him any that I receive but he does not have :)
THINGS COMING UP
Eviem assures me that herself and Arclight are still working away on brining Beast Enders (A interactive show) back to the net. I hope to let you know more about it when they have sorted out the details. NightWing has been busy working on a web mystery game, I think some of you have had a sneak preview. It sounds as if it could be a lot of fun, I am looking forward to playing it.
Hi Gang
Just a very quick and short newsletter... I just wanted to invite you all to an on-line party.
ON-LINE PARTY TO BE HELD ON APRIL 26TH IN #CRICKY&NOXAS
It has been sometime since we have had an on-line party, so I guess it is time to throw one.
A party celebrating a year of Cricky and myself being together on the Internet will be held in the IRC room #Cricky&Noxas on the Uppernet range of servers at 24:00 GMT. Check out the "City Apartment" for details on IRC and Uppernet if you are unfamiliar with them.
The time of the party is 19:00 EST, which is good for the American and Canadians and hopefully not to late for Europeans, sorry to the Australians and those who time zones makes the party either very early or late. I am sure if you pop in before or after the time of the party there will be some of us around :)
I hope that a number of you who have not been in IRC land much the last few months will make the effort to pop in and reacquaint yourselves. It will be nice to see friends that have moved to other chat sites or just spend less time on-line.
There will be additional rooms created on Uppernet called #Bedroom and #Bathroom, these are un-moderated so enter at your own risk *g*. So stock up on snacks and booze and join in the party fun.
AMERICAN PARTY TO BE HELD ON OCT 25TH IN SOUTH CAROLINA
The party is progressing and I thought you would like to know who is thinking about coming. If you are interested in coming then please mail Cricky@geocities.com so that we can send more specific mails to you closer to the day.
Shown interest: lisa, joat, karna, g-9, raven, be, merlin, cheeser, zubbs, sharruma, gromit, t, roy, tw, anita, a-jay, skipper, Nightwing, merlin.
Definite: Cricky, Noxas, albie, spectre, woutan, seaa, and loulou.
Hi Gang
I seem to start every newsletter with an apology for how long it has been since the last one. I originally intended to send these out more frequently but I think it is better for me to wait until I have some real news for you all. So here is the latest news....
>>> The American Party
>>> Noxas On-line Birthday Bash
You can all praise or blame Gromit for this one, he suggested that we have not had an on-line party for sometime and suggested that we have one in August. As my 30th birthday happens to also fall in that month and no better suggestions have been made for an excuse to party...
You are all invited to my 30th birthday bash, any suggestions for a theme or a better excuse then myself being one year closer to senility will be gladly accepted. I suggest that at some point in the evening we can have a bad joke competition, then again is that not how most of our parties' end up. The date will be Friday August the 15th starting 18:00 EST, the location is of course room #Cricky&Noxas on the Uppernet IRC servers. Bring a bottle, some food and lots of bad jokes... hope to see you there :)
>>> Roy has obtained his degrees
To some of you this may be old news, to me it is a reminder as to how long ago I sent the last Newsletter. Congratulations are due to Roy from Hawaii who has obtained two Bachelor of Art Degrees with Distinction. The degrees awarded are in Cultural Anthropology and Marketing/Entrepreneurship. After initially considering the possibility of coming to work in the UK his thoughts have now turned to Canada... speaking of which...
>>> Eviem is off to Canada
The papers have been signed and confirmed Eviem has been granted permission to move from the UK to Canada. She wishes to apologize for not being around chatting much recently, she has been rather busy making the necessary arrangements. Her final day in the UK is September the 5th, and then a brave new country - well ok a confident young one - awaits her arrival.
>>> Raven's suggestion for a calling card club
Raven recently suggested that with such an international group as we have an old ham radio habit might be fun to adopt. The idea is that when we visit foreign shores we post each other postcards, business cards, any type of calling card. I like the idea and if any of you are from the US and wish to receive a postcard then please send me your address. When I arrive in the land of the free this coming October I shall send you a postcard
Well that's all folks... I hope to chat with you on-line August the 15th and to see some of you at the party during the weekend of October the 25th.
Yours and Mine
This time I have made no attempt to keep it small or relevant to any theme, instead preferring to put it all in and let people skip over anything that does not interest them. Let me know what you think, and of course if you have anything to put in the newsletter then please pass it on to me... thanks. There is a new room added to the Cherryvodka web sites, Cricky has created a site called the Beach House. The beach house contains pictures from this year's American party and is slowly taking over some of the material from the country cabin. The Photo Gallery, which can now be accessed from any of the sites, has also been updated to include more pictures from last year's party and trips. I intend over Christmas to keep adding more and more pictures onto the photo gallery... hopefully the rest of the American pics will be up quicker then the last lot of photo's. The web counter for the City Apartment recently totaled 3 million hits. This would be very impressive, if I believed it but I am sure that geocities has screwed up somewhere :o) >>> American Party Another year, another party and a few more close encounters have taken place. Thanks to all of you that made it to the American party, everyone agreed that it was a success and reached new records on alcohol consumption. For those that did not make it and are interested the list of attendees is A-Jay, Anita, Linda, Regancy, Loulou, Frank, Cricky, Noxas, Woutan, Spectre, Helene, and Roy. Karna was there in spirit, 100% proof, if not in person and spent a long time chatting with everyone via the phone. With the successful completion of one party there starts the organizing for the next one. Thanks for all the suggestions and offers, I will wait until the New Year has taken grip before starting to contact people to make further arrangements. Please realize that whereever the next Cricky&Noxas party is held there is going to be a lot more people disappointed with how far away it is being held then are happy with how close it is. Regarding my visit to America my first surprise was how different the language is, you are lulled into a false sense of security by the words sounding the same when they in fact mean something completely different. Sure we have passed many words back and forth between our cultures but despite mass Americanization in the movies there are still a startling number of differences. Most of the differences are extremely slight and these cause the most problems... as people continue a conversation rapidly going nowhere due to a slight deviation between the definition of the words first selected. The second surprise, and one that I thought would have been mentioned to me by friends that had visited both the states and the UK, is the toilets. Sitting poised with your genitals dangling sometimes less then an inch above a bowl of water is disconcerting. Admittedly the system does have advantages in keeping the bowel clean, but what ever you do don't look down. This one offers no advantages that I can find, eating a salad before a meal. You pay for an expensive dish, you have no idea how large or filling it is going to be and then they serve you salad. How much salad do you eat? Too much and you will be to full to eat the more tasty and expensive dish, to little and you are left feeling hungry at the end of the meal. Even if you manage to calculate the size of the coming dish, sneakingly looking at fellow dinners just served meals, then you still frequently end up with a dish consisting of just meat and potato. A dish should be a fusion of different scents and flavors not just two rather bland flavors devoid of the subtle tastes that salads provide. I griped my salad plate with a firm hand and asked the waitress to bring me my main dish.... from the look in my eye she realized I meant business and wondered off muttering aggressively something about having a nice day. There is little doubt in my mind that if there is a concept I would export to the Americans it would be summed up by the word "Proper". There are certain ways of doing things that not only have been done that way for centuries but also have sound sensible reasons for still being done that way; these things are refereed to in English as "proper". A "proper" horse ride is through scenery that is delightful to look at and brings thoughts of Lords riding across their land watched by their peasant workers. The ride should not consist of plunging through nests of cobwebs and along noisy polluted busy roads peeping into the back gardens of people's houses. A "Proper" meal is one that both excites the palate and fulfils the need for sustenance. Not something tasting and nearly consisting of a pile of sugar with a cheery on top that results in a triple bi-pass operation later. The cherry is iced of course due to the extreme bitter taste even a cherry has to American palates. >>> Christmas & New Year Party I know I have left this to the very last minute, sadly most of you will have made other arrangements by now. My only excuse is how busy I have been celebrating Christmas by having meals, and the occasional drink for medicinal purposes, with friends and colleagues from work. The date of the party is Saturday the 27th, the location is of course #Cricky&Noxas chat room and the time is 18:00 GMT, though of course people will be popping in and out during the day due to time zone differences. Unfortunately, Tunes is using an intermediary with the band and has not been told of the band or album name yet, guess songwriters are treated as badly as newsletter writers *smile*. Well as we will all have a wait until the recorded version is available Tunes has kindly allowed me to publish the lyrics. Song Title: You made me Believe Song Author: David Hall (Tunes) As I'm sitting alone, at home tonight Wishing you were here, by my side Singing a sad love song, that'll never be heard by you. Thinking of all the time that we spent, Even though it's not long, you don't know what it meant You don't realise what you done to me girl, do you ? Chorus: You made me believe (You made me believe) You made me want to sing (You made me want to sing) You made all the leaves on trees, start to bloom again. Now your love it has gone, from me, tonight Your no longer there to hold me tight I don't know what I'll do girl, without you. So I'm writing this song, to make you see He's no good for you girl, you should be with me I'll wait till the end of time, until you see. (Chorus) Why does this life, have to be so cruel ? The love that is lost, well it's gone for good You were the only thing I had to keep me sane. Now I look all around I can't see no gain The pain that I feel, that's what, remains My life was in your hands and you threw it away. So goodbye to life and love, I'll never see you again... >>> Sc-Fi Conventions I recently had a chance to brush shoulders with the famous by attended two sc-fi conventions. The first was a "Dr Who" convention, for those that have not heard of this show it is a UK TV program started in the 60's which kept going into the 80's. An American company then brought up the rights, produced a typical action adventure movie that had very little to do with the original series and failed to attract many viewers. The second convention was a "Star Wars" one, if you have not heard of that series of movies then I suggest doing a search on the web or getting out more. I managed to get autographs from all the actors some in books and some on photo's, making sure that I got one from David Prowse (Darth Vader) addressed to Gromit. Even chatted with David's wife about Gromit and how we communicate using the Internet. Instead of just listening to the actors/actresses talking on stage I was invited to dinners with the stars after each convention, I had made friends with Lesa, who's sister Traci was friends with Tony, who's brother Paul organized the convention. So a select few of us got a chance to spend time talking one to one with the people that everyone else was queuing for hours just to get an autograph from. The high lights of the two evening meals was; Anika Wills (Polly from Dr Who) giving me a kiss which made all her fans go green with envy. I spent a fair amount of time debating politics with Michael Craze (Ben from Dr Who), even Michael's manager got involved - he worked as a public relations officer for Clinton briefly. Peter Mayhew (Chewbacca) spent some time sitting and chatting with me about his love life, or rather his lack of interest in settling down. Jermey Bulloch (Boba Fett) and Michael Shard (Admiral Ouzel) had a drink with me at the bar and criticized the rest of the English Star Wars actors as not being true thespians. Not all was good though; Kenny Baker (R2-D2) disliked me smoking and quickly hurried away, and despite me talking the restaurant into serving dinner early for Mike Carter (Bib Fortuna) he was rather unfriendly and untalkative. Both of the sc-fi events was extremely successful, the last one was over booked and resulted in upset fans paying but not getting into the theatre. Pictures taken at the event and a couple of news reports have been added to the photo gallery, or soon will be. Unfortunately not many of the pictures came out well due to problems with poor lighting, old camera batteries and the wrong speed film. >>> Off the Line - by Roy Our last offline party was held in Charleston, South Carolina, last October. It was a continuous comment of Noxas during that party about the high watermark of American toilets. His specific comment was how disconcerting it is to have one's genitalia only inches from one's by-products. His comments gave rise to similar thoughts that occurred to me during my first visit to the UK for the 1996-offline party. I clearly remember my entry into the UK, and the strange happenings that were inflicted upon me. I knew I was in trouble one night entered a country where subways were called undergrounds, trains were called trams, and telephone booths were call boxes. To aggravate the problem of my assimilation to life in the UK, no one there spoke a standard version of English language. The Brits speak the English language with the emphasis on all the wrong syllables. Interestingly, those of us from the States and Canada were able to understand the Brits far better than the Brits could understand us. We politely reminded the Brits (not wanting as guests to insult our hosts) that we were citizens of capitalistic countries, and we were trained from birth to the economy of time. Thus, slow speech indicates the creeping ills of a socialistic government. This, however, was not the most serious of the problems I encountered during my visit to the UK. I do not think I am making an understatement to say that the laws and regulations regarding the conduct of the proper operation an automobile within the UK is weird in the extreme. For example, take this stoplights. In the U.S., the yellow light occurs only after the green light as a warning to slow down. In the UK, a flashing yellow light also occurs after the red light. I can only assume the fact that such a condition in stoplights exists due to the British sense of fair play. In the U.S. it is every man for himself. However, it is obvious to me from the flashing yellow light on red that the British wish to give all their automobile drivers a fair chance for an equal getaway at the green. This is not in the only irregularity I encountered in driving in the UK. Everyone in that country drives on the wrong side of the road! I determined after much deliberation that if all the drivers in the UK wished to violate the law of proper automobile right-of-way, I should throw in my with them. For after all, when one is in Rome, one should do is as the Romans do. Therefore, during my time in the UK, I participated in the Brits' protest against authority, and I, too, drove on the wrong sigh the road. To my amazement, not once did a police officer (or should I say, "Bobbie") pulled me over ("nicked" me) for a traffic ticket. Having resolved to be a violator of the traffic code of the UK by driving on the wrong side of the road, proceeded merrily upon my way. It was at that point I encountered that unique British invention, the roundabout. To understand my confusion act my first encounter of a British roundabout, one first needs to understand how roads are laid out in the United States. Roads in the United States are laid out on a North-South, East-West grid. An East-West highway has an even number designation, and a North-South highway has an odd number designation. Therefore, if one in the United States is on a highway with an even number designation, one will eventually arrive at either the Atlantic or Pacific Ocean, which is which may be determined by whether the sun rises or sets over the water. Likewise, when driving on an odd numbered highway in the United States, one knows that either the Canadian or Mexican border will be eventually reached. Again, which border is which returns us to the opening comments of this essay regarding language. The UK did not have the convenience of history to have its roads and by-ways laid out in the neat squared grids of the United States. Good governments should lay out good roads. That said, the roads in the UK meander in the extreme, which returns us to the subject at hand, the British roundabout. In simplistic terms, a roundabout is a circular driveway with three or more roads accessing that driveway at unusual and unexpected angles of attack. No neat four-way stop, here. It is a circular free-for-all engaged in by all drivers with dizzying nonchalance. For the poor Yank engaging in the roundabout exercise with the expectation that the driver to the right will yield right-of-way, it can be a fender-bending experience. It can be said that a visit to any foreign country, even one that allegedly speaks one's own language, is a fender-bending exercise of the mind. One does tend to bump up against similarities that are dissimilar. Language and driving habits are only two examples. What the true beauty is for those of us who participate in The Hugging Room is that we make a sincere effort to cross those boundaries and create a world, as it should be. It is a world where we respect our common differences and respect that which is common in our humanity. When's the next party!!!!???? **MEGA HUGS** and aloha, you all. >>> A Puter Prayer - by unkown Every night I lie in bed This little prayer inside my head God bless my mom and dad and bless my children ....... And God, there's just one more thing I wish that you would do if you don't mind me asking......... to just bless my puter too? Now I know that its not normal to bless a small machine but listen just a second and I'll try to explain... You see, that little metal box holds more than odds and ends. inside those small components rest a hundred loving friends. Some its true I've never seen and most I've never met we've never shaken hands or ever truly hugged, and yet.. I know for sure they love me by the kindnesses they give and this little scrap of metal is how I get to where they live. By faith is how I know them much the same as I know you..... by sharing my life it brings them close, so if its ok with you.. Just take an extra minute from your duties up above.. to bless this little hunk of steel that's filled with so much love.
