In his commentary on Mipham Rinpoche's Precious Lamp of Certain Knowledge, Khenpo says that a well-crafted title of a work gives a different amounts of information to people of different levels of understanding. To the person of the highest caliber, the entire content of the work becomes manifest in his or her mind. To the person of middling caliber, the title indicates the subject matter of the work. And to a person of low caliber, the title at least indicates which book it is so that they can bring it to someone else.

We hope this bibliography, limited to authors mentioned on this site, will be of value to people of all levels of understanding, though it is in its early stages and incomplete. Translations are not separated from original works, but are placed under the head of the title in the original language. Works are categorized first by author then, in another section, by subject. In the section organized by subject only a title and a link to the full citation in the Author section are given. If you note any inaccuracies, errors, or holes, please let us know at
nalanda@earthlink.net

For texts originally written in Sanskrit, aside from Tibetan, only English translations are given, unless an English translation is unknown, in which case all known translations into European languages are given. If there is no known translation into a European language, all known translations into Asian languages other than Tibetan are given. Sanskrit titles are capitalized and stripped of diacritical marks, though this is probably absurd.

To minimize download time, the Author section of the bibliography is broken up into sections for browsing:
A–D   E–J   K–P   Q-Z

or, select the first letter of the author's name (letters with no entry are ommitted):

Dharmakirti

We know of no texts by Dharmakirti in translation (but would greatly appreciate being made aware of any). In his commentary on Mipham Rinpoche's Neshe Rinpoche Dronme, Trans. Precious Lamp of Certain Knowledge, Translated by Chokyi Nyima (Richard Barron), Khenpo Gyurmed Trinley Rinpoche explores in depth many aspects of Dharmakirti's philosophy. A transcription of the teaching is in progress on this site, and a recording of the commentary (48 cassette tapes) is available from Chagdud Gompa Foundation by special request.

For a discussion of correct reasoning by Mipham Rinpoche (commentary by Khenchen Palden Sherab Rinpoche, introduction by Khenpo Tsewang Dongyal Rinpoche, translated by Rime Lodro Waldo) strongly influenced by Dharmakirti, visit Rime Lodro Waldo's site and download The Sword of Knowledge.

Recognizing Reality, Dharmakirti's Philosophy and its Tibetan Interpretations, Georges B. J. Dreyfus, State University of New York Press, 1997 presents a provocative, deeply egaging, and very useful discussion of Dharmakirti's philosophy, placing Dharmakirti's ideas in both the historical Indian and Tibetan frameworks and in relation to certain aspects of the Euro/Anglo philosophical tradition

Debate in Tibetan Buddhism, by Daniel E. Perdue, Snow Lion Publications, Ithaca, New York, 1992, is another interesting text whose subject matter, though not directly connected to Dharmakirti, owes a great deal to him.
