In order to boost back-catalog sales after the breakup of the band, nine Stone Temple Pilots singles were being re-released by their album company. The gimmick was that they were all to be released on vinyl and they were all supposedly exclusive "Hip-hop" remixes of the band's greatest hits. Mark, a guy from my corridor, had purchased the complete set of nine singles and also a nifty display rack for them. I looked over them, and saw that two were Public Enemy-related remixes: one by Terminator X and one by Hank Shocklee. I asked if I could listen, and what I heard was terrible. They were simply Public Enemy songs, only with Weiland wailing some miserable Stone Temple Pilots lyrics over top of them. I saw another single which was supposedly a KRS-One remix (which I found odd, since he is not a dj) and it was just "Love Is Gonna Getcha" by Boogie Down Productions (home of KRS-One) with Weiland singing over it. All of a sudden, I was in the middle of a video for "the Slick Rick remix." Mr. Rick was strutting about in his smooth way, while Mr. Weiland was writhing about, flailing his arms and staring at the sky in his pathetically pretentious way, singing some of his soul-felt lyrics over the music. It was horrible. Slick Rick seemed somehow oblivious to Weiland, as if Weiland's body was superimposed into the Slick Rick video the same way his voice was superimposed onto the Slick Rick song. I imagine that if he knew Weiland was there, he probably would have thwacked him with his cane. Meanwhile, the rest of the band sat on a card table in the corner of the room. Poor Mark, I think even the original Stone Temple Pilots songs were better than these.
