Number 3 in my series of John Freeman kites: the chinese fertility kite (the others being the bargello butterfly and noodle).
This design is ancient (even David Pelham mentions it in his venerable Book of Kites :-). In China, farmers would fly this kite with bundles of rice grass as a tail. In flight the grains of rice would scatter over the fields in a ritual to ensure future fertility. John's kite uses more modern materials, but is otherwise very close to the original.
Technical Specs: A flat kite with 2 bridle points and 3 tails.
