March offers numerous opportunities from a Sunday outing to Plains, GA for Sunday School with Jimmy Carter to a special guest musician from Atlanta at our church to a program on Primitive Baptists in south Georgia followed by a picnic at the oldest Primitive Baptist church in the state and many other events. For the next several months there are numerous Florida District activities as well. You’ll find details about these and other opportunities elsewhere in the newsletter. Please join in as many activities as you can.

Atlanta UU Musician Brings Special Service
"Freedom and Responsibility in a Creedless Church" is the theme for a special service March 12 brought to us by Bo Chagnon of Atlanta. Bo is a professional musician,workshop leader, and presenter of Sunday services for UU congregations all over the country. His services are described as dynamic, compelling, and thought-provoking. You'll want to invite your friends to join us for a memorable Sunday morning experience!
The Religious Education program is continuing to cover world religions in the curriculum "Neighboring Faiths." The Youth R.E. group has also started to improve our natural areas surrounding the church by building bird houses and setting out bird feeders.
Special Sunday trip to Plains:
To continue their study of "Neighboring Faiths" the Youth R.E.plan to attend Marantha Baptist Church in Plains, Georgia on March 5. This is the church where President Jimmy Carter attends and regularly teaches Sunday School. He is scheduled to teach Sunday School on March 5 at 10 am. To attend we will have to leave our church in Valdosta between 7 am and 7:15 am. Children and adults of all ages are welcome to attend. In February we welcomed new members Frank and Teresa Bibins, Diane Holliman, Randy Thompson, Julie Armstrong, and Ann and Genna Kasun. We are excited to have all of you as part of our church family. A special program for new members is planned in the near future. Watch for an announcement soon. If there are others who would like to officially join our congregation, please speak with one of the officers.

Games night is back for the first Saturday night of the month. Bring $1.00, a dish, and your favorite game to the church on Saturday March 4 at 7:00 PM. Call René Kerr or Julie Halter if you need further information.
Women’s Group

Joan Cline has extended a special invitation to UU Women to join her at her home on the afternoon of the second Tuesday this month(March 14) from 3:00 – 5:00 PM for coffee.
She knows some of us work and may not be able to get there, but if you can accept her invitation you will no doubt be treated to a real German Cafe Klatsch. She says bring yourself. This is her treat!
Social Action Activities
Break Bread Together
Our date for meal deliveries with the Break Bread Together program is now the 2nd Monday of each month. If you can deliver meals on this day beginning about 11:00 AM, please contact Virginia Branan.
Ryan White Consortium Meeting
Volunteer Needed – Molly Scholtz has been our representative at the Ryan White Consortium meetings. She can no longer fill this function because of her job. Is there someone who could represent us? The next meeting is March 16, 9:00 AM. The Ryan White Consortium is a several county network which deals with HIV/AIDS education. Please let Charles Judah know if you can help. You may want to call the Public Health Office at 333-5290 to confirm the time and location of the next meeting.

Potluck Social
The Gay-Straight Network will be meeting regularly at the UU church the second Wednesday of each month for a potluck social. The next meeting will be on March 8 at 7:00 PM. Bring a potluck dish and join in the conversation. Contact Ann Kasun (253-9548) for further information.

Book Discussion and Potluck Social
Sunday, March 26 7 P.M. at Joan Cline's home. The book is "The Long Walk" by Slavomir Rawicz, a Polish prisoner of war who escaped from a Soviet Labor Camp in 1941 and walked through Siberia, China, Gobi Desert, Tibet, and over the Himalayas to India. It is a tale of man's intense desire for freedom.

March 3-5, The Mountain - The Ambassador Weekend This is a free weekend for a representative from our church to go to The Mountain, the UU Camp and Conference Center in Highlands, NC. During this weekend you would participate in planning and learning about the various programs at The Mountain. The weekend includes a Saturday evening program with the Mountain Quartet, a visit to the newly acquired land, and a "nuts and bolts discussion". If anyone wants to go as our ambassador, they can register by calling 828-526-5838.

March 11, Thandeka – Community UU Church, Daytona Beach, 8:30 AM-4:00 PM, 5th Annual Florida District Social Justice Conference. Professor Thandeka of Meadville/Lombard Theological school will lead an interactive workshop on race, class, and spirituality. Cost: $35.00 before Feb.28($45.00 late).

April 12-16, UU Womens’s Gathering 2000 "Hera’s Journey" in Leesburg, FL. This is a national conference being hosted by women of the Florida District and UU Women and Religion. Government Representatives:
During one of our discussion recently it was suggested that information be made available about our government representatives.
Locally: We have a City Council and a County Commission which meet regularly. The meetings are open to the public and you can speak at the meetings on issues of concern to you. The meetings are announced in the newspaper.
State: The Georgia General Assembly is in session now for 45 days. We have several local legislators representing various districts in which many of us live. Our State Senator is Tim Golden(656-0152). Most of us are represented in the State House by one of the following: Jay Shaw (Lakeland, 404-245-7977). Ron Borders(Valdosta, 247-5888), or Henry Reaves(Quitman, 404-656-5122).
Federal: In Washington, DC our Georgia Senators are Max Cleland(202-224-3521, SD 461 Dirksen Senate Office Bldg,, Washington, DC 20501) and Paul Coverdale(202-224-3643, 200 Russell Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC 20510).
